Our Marine Underwriting team is seeking an Assistant Vice President to join our team in the Dallas or Houston, TX locations. This is a full-time, exempt role. This is a hybrid opportunity.

POSITION OVERVIEW:

The AVP of Marine Underwriting reports directly to the President of Marine, with responsibility for driving underwriting quality, strategic underwriting direction and underwriting oversight for the Marine Business Unit. The incumbent demonstrates a high level of underwriting expertise partnering with leaders, underwriters, and corporate underwriting resources to ensure a consistent level of underwriting discipline, effective organizational management, and communication in driving the business.

IN THIS ROLE, YOU WILL:
  • Partner with Marine Leadership to develop a Marine strategy that aligns with the overall Business Insurance strategic plan
  • Manage the overall Underwriting performance through establishment of underwriting guidelines, underwriting referrals and underwriting audits.
  • Partner closely with Marine leaders to understand performance within each class of marine business and influence actions needed to optimize results
  • Develop risk selection and pricing tools that streamline the underwriting process and improve profitability
  • Provides state of the art product offerings to our marine customers ensuring competitiveness and product innovation, including customized products for our program business
  • Provide oversight and governance on all marine coverages
  • Provide the leadership, mentoring, and guidance necessary to build and sustain a high performing workforce in managing the home office team
  • Provide training on products and line of business tools to the field/business units to ensure effective execution
  • Prepare regular product overviews to Marine Leadership, Business Insurance and Corporate leadership on the performance of the lines as well as external industry developments
  • Partner with corporate departments of claims, finance, reinsurance, compliance, legal, actuary, product development, operations, underwriting, and marketing to leverage capabilities and ensure marine compliance with corporate initiatives
WHAT YOU NEED TO APPLY:
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience
  • 10+ years of inland marine underwriting experience
  • 3+ years of leadership experience, with a demonstrated track record in managing, coaching, and motivating staff across a highly matrixed organization
  • A proven leader with strategic and creative marine product and underwriting skills and deep insight into the insurance industry and competition
  • Exceptional communication skills and decisive decision-making skills
  • Strategic and insightful in their thinking, with good judgment and an intuitive sense of where to look for risks and opportunities both within the company and in the broader industry
  • Able to trade-off the risks and rewards in a particular situation while also considering the big picture of company-wide impact, industry trends, and strategic implications
  • A collaborative, team player with strong results orientation and sense of urgency
  • Ability to travel as needed (by car or plane)

The target hiring range for this role may vary based on geographic location and other factors, including merit or performance, demonstrated proficiency, skills for the role, education, travel requirements, and experience. Additional compensation may include an annual bonus (which could take the form of a general bonus, sales incentive, or short-term incentive), long-term incentive or spot recognition awards. The posted range reflects our ability to hire at different position titles and levels depending on background and experience.
