What are mapping jobs?

Mapping jobs involve the creation, analysis, and interpretation of maps and spatial data. Professionals in this field use geographic information systems (GIS), remote sensing technology, and cartographic skills to collect, visualize, and manage geographical information. These jobs can be found in areas such as urban planning, environmental management, transportation, and surveying. Mapping specialists help organizations make informed decisions based on spatial data, often working with both digital and physical maps.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a mapping specialist?

To thrive as a Mapping Specialist, you need expertise in geography, spatial analysis, cartography, and typically a degree in geography, GIS, or a related field. Proficiency with Geographic Information Systems (GIS) software such as ArcGIS or QGIS, remote sensing tools, and relevant certifications like GISP are highly valued. Attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and strong communication skills help you interpret data accurately and present findings effectively. These skills ensure the production of precise, reliable maps and spatial data critical for decision-making across industries.

What are the qualifications to get a mapping job?

The qualifications to get a mapping job depend on the type of work you do. If you are in the geography or GIS fields, you typically need an associate degree or a bachelor’s degree in a relevant subject, such as GIS or geography, or a certificate in GIS along with other coursework. In data mapping, employers usually require a bachelor’s degree in database architecture, computer science, or information technology. Additional requirements for mapping jobs include strong analytical problem-solving and organizational skills, attention to detail, and the ability to be on the road for long periods to travel to remote sites.

How do mapping professionals typically collaborate with other departments in a project environment?

Mapping professionals often work closely with teams in engineering, environmental science, urban planning, and IT to ensure that spatial data is accurately integrated into broader project objectives. Collaboration usually involves sharing geospatial data, coordinating site surveys, and participating in cross-functional meetings to align on project requirements and timelines. Effective communication skills are essential, as mapping specialists often translate complex technical data into actionable insights for non-technical stakeholders. This collaborative approach not only enhances project outcomes but also provides mapping professionals with opportunities to broaden their expertise and advance their careers.

Mapping involves creating visual representations of spatial data, often using GIS technology. Cartographers focus specifically on designing and producing detailed maps, combining artistic and technical skills. While all cartographers are mappers, not all mappers are necessarily cartographers. Understanding these differences helps job seekers target the right roles in the GIS and mapping industry.

Is mapping a good career?

Mapping is a viable career that involves creating geographic representations using GIS software, GPS technology, and spatial analysis skills. It offers opportunities in industries such as urban planning, environmental management, and transportation, often requiring technical training or certification. The field can provide stable employment with the potential for specialization and advancement.

What are mapping jobs called?

Mapping jobs are often referred to as cartographer, GIS analyst, GIS technician, or geospatial analyst roles. These positions involve creating, analyzing, and managing geographic data using tools like GIS software and GPS technology. Skills in spatial analysis, data management, and map creation are essential for these roles.

Job description

Job Title: Telecom Fiber Design Drafter

Job Description

This role focuses on drafting and supporting the design of broadband communication and fiber optic network systems. You will use specialized tools such as 3-GIS, ArcGIS, and AutoCAD to create, update, and quality-check high-level design maps and related documentation for telecom and utility fiber projects. The position offers the opportunity to contribute to a growing engineering team with a strong pipeline of fiber design work and long-term consulting potential. This position is a hybrid role that allows for 2-3 work from home days.

Responsibilities

  • Participate in the design process of broadband communication and fiber optic systems using 3-GIS fiber network management software.
  • Originate Rural Utilities Service (RUS) codes on existing High Level Design (HLD) maps in AutoCAD to ensure accurate documentation and compliance with standards.
  • Perform quality control reviews on HLD maps to verify that designs adhere to established telecom and fiber design standards.
  • Prepare detailed splice guides in Microsoft Excel that clearly correlate to individual maps and job names for field and engineering use.
  • Update system maps and design files in 3-GIS and AutoCAD when changes or edits occur to the original HLD design.
  • Collaborate with engineering and field services teams to ensure fiber drafting outputs support project schedules and technical requirements.
  • Learn and apply internal processes and workflows for utility and fiber design projects, incorporating feedback from team members.
  • Maintain organized digital files and documentation to support ongoing and future fiber design projects.

Essential Skills

  • Diploma or equivalent education.
  • At least 1 year of experience using ArcGIS software for fiber network or telecom drafting.
  • Hands-on fiber drafting experience, preferably in telecom or utility design environments.
  • Proficiency with AutoCAD for working with High Level Design (HLD) maps.
  • Ability to perform detailed quality control on design maps and documentation.
  • Competence in using Microsoft Excel to create structured, detailed splice guides.
  • Understanding of fiber optic and telecom design concepts and terminology.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • 1+ years of ArcGIS experience combined with 3-GIS exposure is preferred.
  • Experience working in telecom, fiber optic, or utility engineering design projects.
  • Comfort working within small, collaborative engineering teams.
  • Ability to adapt to evolving processes and project workloads in a growing organization.
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy in drafting and documentation.
  • Willingness to grow into a long-term consulting or direct hire role with the team.

Work Environment

You will join a small, close-knit engineering team of approximately 25 people that is actively growing and expanding its fiber design portfolio. The office is currently located in Georgetown, KY and will relocate to Frankfort, KY around mid-August. The position offers a flexible hybrid work structure: once the Georgetown office is settled, you can expect to work 2–3 days from home and the remaining days in the office. During the transition from Georgetown to Frankfort, experienced candidates may primarily work from home up to four days per week with one day in-office, shifting to the standard hybrid arrangement once the Frankfort office is fully operational. Core working hours are 7:00 AM to 3:30 PM. All necessary equipment is provided, and you will receive training and support from an experienced 3-GIS professional to help you ramp up in the role. The environment is business casual, low key, and collaborative, with a focus on long-term project work and professional growth. The engagement is structured as a 9-month consulting assignment with intent to convert to a direct role, and if direct hire is not immediately possible, it is expected to continue as a long-term contract. One week of paid time off and holiday time (billed back to the client) is available.
