Job description

Description Position open June 01, 2026 to August 15, 2026 SUMMARY Under the supervision of the Director of Planning & Development, the Planning Intern will assist staff with ongoing projects and departmental responsibilities. This internship is designed to provide students with practical, hands-on experience in municipal planning and development within a fast-paced environment. The intern will work closely with planning and development staff to support daily administrative functions and contribute to current City projects.

Responsibilities include assisting with plan reviews, preparing materials for boards and commissions, and conducting follow-up site visits. The intern will have opportunities to observe and, when appropriate, participate in meetings with the Planning Commission/Board of Zoning Appeals, Architectural Board of Review, and Landmark Commission. The selected candidate will be expected to complete assignments independently and maintain a high level of professionalism.

Examples of Duties ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES: Project areas may include, but are not limited to: Archiving and records management, including reorganizing planning files, indexing, and digitizing documents Assisting with Noble Road / Mayfield Triangle documentation, mapping, and planning efforts Conducting zoning code research Supporting the Zoning Inspector with documentation of zoning complaints and violations Assisting with grant writing and grant administration activities Conducting historic preservation research and documentation Preparing materials and assembling information for staff reports Conducting follow-up site visits as needed Performing other duties as assigned Typical Qualifications EDUCATION: Current enrollment in an accredited college or university pursuing a degree in Urban Planning, City Planning, Public Administration, Geography, Architecture, or a related field Completion of at least one (1) year of undergraduate coursework preferred Supplemental Information ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: The work environment and physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. The position requires reporting to City Hall. PHYSICAL DEMANDS Sedentary Work: Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body. Sedentary work involves sitting most of the time.

Jobs are sedentary if walking and standing are required only occasionally, and all other sedentary criteria are met. WORK ENVIRONMENT Position is typically office or administrative work and is not substantially exposed to adverse environmental conditions.
