Job description

Snap Inc is a technology company. We believe the camera presents the greatest opportunity to improve the way people live and communicate. Snap contributes to human progress by empowering people to express themselves, live in the moment, learn about the world, and have fun together.

The Company operates Snapchat, a visual messaging app that enhances your relationships with friends, family, and the world, and Specs Inc., a wholly-owned subsidiary dedicated to making computing more human, in addition to Bitmoji, Saturn, and other digital services.

Snap Engineering teams build fun and technically sophisticated products that reach hundreds of millions of Snapchatters around the world, every day. We're deeply committed to the well-being of everyone in our global community, which is why our values are at the root of everything we do. We move fast, with precision, and always execute with privacy at the forefront.

We're looking for an Engineering Manager to join the Maps team at Snap!

Our mission is to build the world's most personal map. While most digital maps were built for cars, Snap Map is built for people: a place to stay in touch with your friends, find things to do together, and explore the world. The breadth of Snapchat's audience makes it the most-used map outside of Google and Apple Maps, and this team owns the backend services and data infrastructure behind it, from friend location to places to the content that makes the map feel alive.

What you'll do:
  • Manage and mentor a team of backend engineers, in a fast-paced, quick-to-market environment

  • Set the strategy, build a roadmap, create measurable goals, and lead your team to deliver

  • Collaborate with Product, Operation, Data Science and Engineering teams, and executive stakeholders

  • Evaluate the technical tradeoffs of major decisions and be a strong technical mentor

  • Hire, grow and retain high-performing team members

  • Utilize AI tools and high velocity engineering workflows to design and ship scalable services while upholding rigorous standards for code correctness, security, and production ready quality code

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
  • Background with building high availability and mission critical backend systems

  • Experience with leading an engineering team

  • A track record on both sides of the infrastructure and product split: you have built platform or infrastructure that other teams depend on, and you have shipped user-facing features and been accountable for their metrics

  • Experience building backend infrastructure and shipping user-facing product: you have built platform services other teams depend on, and you have owned features and the metrics they move

  • Ability leading and executing large, complex technical initiatives

  • Proficiency in, or a strong aptitude for, leveraging AI tools to streamline development, paired with the critical judgment to audit generated output for architectural integrity, performance bottlenecks, and security risks.

  • Adaptability in learning and applying evolving AI systems and tools to remain at the forefront of engineering trends and modern development practices

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's Degree in a relevant technical field such as computer science or equivalent years of practical work experience

  • 9+ years of post-Bachelor's software development experience; or a Master's degree in a technical field + 8+ years of post-grad software development experience; or a PhD in a related technical field + 5+ years of post-grad software development experience

  • 1+ years of experience managing a team or acting as a technical lead

  • Experience with distributed systems and backend service development

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience with geospatial or location-based systems, such as map data pipelines, place and POI data, routing, or spatial indexing

  • Familiarity with driving large scale initiatives from ideation to completion

  • Track record of delivery in rapidly changing, highly collaborative, multi-stakeholder environments

  • Experience with Ops-heavy systems/products

If you have a disability or special need that requires accommodation, please don't be shy and provide us some information.
