Job description

Utilities Area ME Leader

Position Description:

Description: The Utilities Area Manufacturing Excellence (ME) Leader reports directly to the Manager of Manufacturing Excellence (MME). The Utilities Area ME Leader is directly responsible for the Manufacturing Excellence process, which includes year-over-year (YOY) continuous improvement in the areas of safety, quality, productivity, reliability and cost reduction. The expectation is a minimum of 80% of the ME Leader’s time will involve activities related to Deliberate Improvement. The ME Leader should, however, maintain awareness of the mill’s day-to-day issues and problems while staying primarily focused on proactive, long-term progress.  The ME Leader must ensure close coordination with resources at all levels of the organization, including Business Unit Managers, Area Managers, and the “improve” resources, to ensure the department’s improvement plan is coordinated and cohesive. The Utilities Area includes boilers, a turbine generator, kraft liquor recovery, water treatment, and wastewater treatment.

Position Requirements & Key Accountability Actions: 

  • Provide visible and active leadership in delivering excellent safety results
  • Dedicated leader for deliberate improvement project identification and execution
  • Provide guidance and priority setting for Process Engineers.
  • Drive mill initiatives in the department to engage all employees in improvement activities and the utilization of Lean Six Sigma tools
  • Lead/provide ME support to project teams on budget initiatives.
  • Coordinates the identification, initiation, development, and successful implementation as shown by results tracking of cost reduction capital opportunities
  • Support the capital FEL process especially at the FEL 1/ analysis and implementation levels.
  • Advocate for sustainable improvement practices and systems.
  • Support operations by assisting with troubleshooting problems utilizing the appropriate ME tools.
  • Support cross departmental projects/initiatives.
  • Identify and deliver sustainable cost savings through multiple deliberate and continuous improvement
  • Train salaried and hourly employees to develop ME skills.
  • Influence Business Unit operations teams to incorporate ME systems and processes to support sustainability of improvements as they are accomplished

 

Qualifications: 

It is required that the Utilities Manufacturing Excellence Leader role be filled by an individual with a strong manufacturing management background and a track record of achieving consistent, significant results through systems and teams. Experience in Pulp and Paper mills or related industries given preference.

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering or related degree and experience
  • 5+ years manufacturing experience preferred
  • Lean manufacturing experience required.
  • Managerial experience in manufacturing is required.
  • Six Sigma Green Belt certification preferred. Willingness to complete green belt training necessary.
  • Experience with continuous improvement concepts and tools.
  • Proficient in MS Excel, MS Word, MS Power Point, PI process book, Proficy, SAP, Microsoft project

Minitab proficiency a plus.
