What is a manual tester?

A manual tester is a member of a software development team responsible for taking and testing a program or app through a wide range of scenarios. In this role, you take the place of an end user and use applications as intended, documenting any bugs or glitches. Testing is not done randomly; you follow a rigid software testing flowchart and end up checking every aspect of the program in a way automated software is unable to replicate. Manual testers must document everything meticulously.

What skills are expected in a good manual tester?

Manual Testers are quality assurance professionals responsible for manually testing software applications to identify bugs, errors, or usability issues before a product is released. They execute test cases without the use of automation tools, carefully documenting results and reporting defects to development teams. Manual Testers play a crucial role in ensuring that software meets specified requirements and functions correctly for end users. Their work often involves collaborating closely with developers, business analysts, and other stakeholders to deliver high-quality software products.

What are some typical challenges manual testers face when working on fast-paced agile teams?

Manual Testers in agile environments often encounter challenges such as keeping up with rapid development cycles, ensuring thorough testing within tight deadlines, and maintaining clear communication with developers and product owners. Since requirements can change frequently, testers must be adaptable and proactive in updating test cases. Successful Manual Testers prioritize tasks effectively, collaborate closely with team members, and use exploratory testing techniques to catch issues that automated tests might miss.

What is the difference between Manual Tester vs Automation Tester?

AspectManual TesterAutomation Tester
CredentialsBasic testing certifications, QA coursesSame as Manual Tester plus scripting knowledge
Work EnvironmentTest cases execution, defect reportingDeveloping and maintaining test scripts
Industry UsageCommon across software QA teamsUsed in projects requiring automated testing
Search IntentCompare manual testing rolesCompare manual and automated testing roles

Manual Testers focus on executing test cases and identifying bugs without automation tools, while Automation Testers develop scripts to automate testing processes. Both roles are essential in QA teams, but Automation Testers require additional scripting skills. Understanding these differences helps employers and candidates choose the right role based on skills and project needs.

How much does a manual tester make?

A manual tester's salary varies by experience, location, and industry, but the average annual pay ranges from $45,000 to $70,000. Entry-level testers typically earn less, while those with several years of experience or certifications can earn higher salaries. Many manual testers also work with testing tools and follow quality assurance processes to ensure software quality.
