Testers follow test cases, report bugs, and collaborate with development teams using online communication and project management tools. Remote manual testers need strong attention to detail, clear documentation skills, and the ability to work independently. This role is crucial for identifying user experience issues and ensuring software quality before release.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a manual software tester working remotely?

To thrive as a Manual Software Tester in a remote setting, you need a solid understanding of software development life cycles, test case design, and defect tracking, typically supported by a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with bug tracking tools like Jira, test management systems such as TestRail, and basic knowledge of SQL are commonly required. Strong attention to detail, effective written communication, and self-motivation are crucial soft skills for remote collaboration and problem-solving. These skills ensure accurate testing, clear reporting, and efficient teamwork, leading to higher software quality in distributed environments.

Job description

VetsEZ is currently looking for a VistA/MUMPS Developer for a 100% remote position supporting a large federal government healthcare modernization project. This role will support a Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) initiative focused on reducing and ultimately eliminating the use of Social Security Numbers (SSNs) within critical VistA applications, workflows, reports, audit records, and related processes. The developer will analyze existing VistA functionality, implement MUMPS/M software modifications, troubleshoot defects, and support the transition from SSN-based processes toward approved enterprise identifiers while reducing exposure of sensitive Personally Identifiable Information (PII).

This position will work within a remote, multidisciplinary Agile development team alongside Lead VistA Developers, Business Analysts, Product Owners, Quality Assurance personnel, cybersecurity teams, and Government stakeholders. Development activities will support multiple VistA packages, including Admission, Discharge, Transfer (ADT), Patient Care Encounter (PCE), Automated Information Collection System (AICS), Record Tracking, and VistA Audit Solutions.

The candidate must reside within the continental US.

Responsibilities:

  • Modify and enhance VistA/MUMPS applications to eliminate or replace SSN usage within business processes, user interfaces, reports, audit trails, and related functionality while implementing approved approaches for transitioning to enterprise identifiers.
  • Analyze existing VistA routines, data structures, workflows, and application dependencies to identify affected functionality, troubleshoot defects, and implement secure, maintainable code consistent with VA and project development standards.
  • Develop and execute unit tests and support functional, integration, regression, User Acceptance Testing, deployment validation, and production-readiness activities to ensure modifications preserve existing functionality and meet approved requirements.
  • Collaborate with Quality Assurance personnel to investigate defects, implement corrections, verify resolutions, and support post-release troubleshooting and application stability.
  • Follow secure software development and sensitive-data-handling practices when working with PII and PHI, support applicable VA privacy, security, and NIST control requirements, and produce technical documentation describing application changes and implementation considerations.
  • Collaborate with Lead Developers, Business Analysts, Product Owners, QA personnel, cybersecurity teams, and other stakeholders within an Agile environment, participating in Sprint Planning, backlog refinement, daily stand-ups, Sprint Reviews, and Retrospectives while communicating estimates, technical issues, dependencies, and risks.
  • Take on additional tasks and responsibilities as needed to support team objectives and ensure the success of the project.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Software Engineering, or a related technical field, or equivalent experience, with 5+ years of professional VistA/MUMPS development experience.
  • Strong hands-on experience programming within VistA using MUMPS/M and InterSystems Cache, GT.M, or a comparable M-based platform.
  • Experience modifying or supporting VistA packages, modules, data structures, or other healthcare information systems, including analysis of existing routines, workflows, and application dependencies.
  • Experience with software debugging and troubleshooting, source control, peer code review, unit and integration testing, and Agile software development practices.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with an understanding of secure software development practices and the ability to accurately troubleshoot complex application issues.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to collaborate effectively within a multidisciplinary software development team and communicate technical issues, dependencies, and risks.

Additional Qualifications:

  • Experience supporting Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) VistA environments, particularly ADT, PCE, AICS, Record Tracking, VistA Audit Solutions, or related VistA packages.
  • Familiarity with PII/PHI protection, healthcare data privacy requirements, and applicable NIST security controls, HIPAA, FISMA, or VA security requirements.
  • Experience working within Agile/Scrum development teams supporting federal healthcare modernization, application remediation, or complex enterprise healthcare environments.

Security Clearance Requirements:

  • U.S. Citizenship is required.
  • All selected candidates must successfully complete a background check.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a Government/Public Trust clearance, including required fingerprinting, when required for the position.

Benefits:

  • Medical/Dental/Vision
  • 401k with Employer Match
  • PTO + Federal Holidays
  • Corporate Laptop
  • Training Opportunities
  • Remote Opportunity
