Job description

Salary: $19.33/HR

This position is responsible for maintaining rights of ways; cleaning and installing new and existing drainage ditches, culverts, and storm drains; repairing roadways, water lines, and sewer; and performing other manual labor as assigned.

As a municipal organization, the City of St. Marys is an emergency provider of services. Some emergency situations, including weather related emergencies, may necessitate City of St. Marys employees to assist in areas of work which may not be directly related to the employees specific job function, but which will be within the physical capabilities, training, and skills of the employee.

MAJOR DUTIES

1. Mows and weeds City grounds including rights of way, lawns, and areas on or near City grounds, roads, City signs, ditches, and sidewalks using mowers, weed eaters, and blowers.

2. Removes tree limbs using sidearm cutter; cuts trees and limbs using chainsaw.

3. Drives flatbed dump truck and/or small dump truck for hauling materials to and from job sites.

4. Operates backhoe for pothole repairs; repairs potholes by filling with asphalt; assists with manhole repairs.

5. Installs and repairs sewer lines, lift stations, water taps, meters, BFPs, force mains, gravity flow lines and services; repairs water lines, water main lines and services, and fire hydrants; locates water and sewer lines prior to performing repairs to avoid damage.

6. Repairs concrete driveways, sidewalks, storm drains, pours forms, places forms, and finishes cement.

7. Sets up and operates laser transit for ditches, manholes, pipes to ensure proper grade; rakes ditches and grades and levels out roads and ditches with motor grader; lays brick or block for drain boxes, valve boxes, or drying beds.

8. Operates, inspects and maintains equipment; fuels trucks and equipment; washes trucks and equipment and lubricates.

9. Installs decorative lights for special events; sets up stages for special events.

10. Performs all other duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION

1. Knowledge of safety rules, policies, and procedures.

2. Knowledge of heavy equipment operation and troubleshooting.

3. Knowledge of carpentry and masonry.

4. Knowledge of plumbing and distribution systems, plant operation, and meter operation.

5. Knowledge of welding/cutting equipment.

6. Knowledge of computers and job-related software programs.

7. Skill in oral and written communication.

8. Skill in operating various types of equipment.

9. Skill in maintaining effective working relationships.

10. Skill in reading and interpreting safety rules, operation and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.

11. Skill in basic math.

SUPERVISORY CONTROLS

The Operations Superintendent assigns work in terms of general instructions. The supervisor spot-checks completed work for compliance with procedures, accuracy, and the nature and propriety of the final results.

GUIDELINES

Guidelines include department policies, procedures, work order guidelines, supervisors directions, and local ordinances. These guidelines are generally clear and specific but may require some interpretation in application.

COMPLEXITY/SCOPE OF WORK

The work consists of variety of equipment operation, maintenance, and repair duties.

The purpose of this position is to maintain rights of ways; cleaning and installs new and existing drainage ditches, culverts, and storm drains; repairs roadways, water lines, and sewer; and performs other manual labor as assigned. Success in this position contributes to efficient and effective operations of this department.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ WORK ENVIRONMENT

The work is typically performed while intermittently standing, sitting, walking, stooping, bending, or crouching. The employee frequently lifts light objects and occasionally lift heavy objects, climbs ladders, uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity, distinguishes between shades of color, and utilizes a sense of smell.

The work is performed in a noisy place or outdoors, occasionally in cold or inclement weather. The employee is exposed to dust, dirt, and grease, machinery with moving parts, and irritating chemicals. Work requires use of protective devices such as masks, goggles, and gloves.

SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

High school diploma or equivalent required; and

More than two years of related experience required; or

Any equivalent combination of education, experience, and training which provides the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the work.

Possession of a valid state drivers license issued for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.

CDL Class A license.
