POSITION SUMMARY
The Commercial Diver at Underwater Mechanix, Inc. (UMX) is responsible for the safe and proficient execution of underwater construction, inspection, repair, and maintenance tasks in support of marine construction and commercial diving projects. Operating under the direct supervision of the Dive Supervisor, the Commercial Diver performs a wide range of subsurface tasks including underwater cutting and welding, pile inspection and repair, concrete placement, rigging, and structure survey. The Commercial Diver is also responsible for serving as standby diver, line tender, and topside support crew member when not in the water.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Underwater Operations
  • Perform surface-supplied air diving operations in compliance with the project dive plan, ADCI standards, and OSHA 29 CFR 1910 Subpart T.
  • Execute underwater construction tasks including pile driving assistance, underwater concrete placement, formwork installation, and marine structure repair.
  • Perform underwater inspection of piles, fenders, sheet pile walls, submerged structures, and seabed conditions with written and photographic documentation.
  • Conduct underwater cutting, welding, and burning operations using oxy-arc and hydraulic tools as qualified and directed.
  • Perform underwater rigging, lifting, and material placement tasks in coordination with topside crane and rigging crews.

Standby & Topside Duties
  • Serve as standby diver during all dive operations when not in the water; remain suited up and ready for immediate emergency deployment.
  • Perform line tender duties including managing umbilical's, maintaining diver communication, and monitoring dive conditions.
  • Assist with setup, operation, and breakdown of surface-supplied dive equipment.
  • Support topside construction activities including rigging, material handling, and general labor as directed.

Safety & Equipment
  • Participate in all pre-dive briefings and JHA/JSA reviews; raise any safety concerns before diving commences.
  • Inspect and verify personal dive equipment prior to each dive; report deficiencies to the Dive Supervisor before entering the water.
  • Complete accurate dive log entries for every dive including depth, bottom time, tasks performed, and anomalies.
  • Properly clean, inspect, and stow personal and shared dive equipment after each use.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • ADCI-certified Commercial Diver (Surface-Supplied) with current, valid certification card.
  • Minimum of 2 years of verifiable commercial diving experience in a construction, inspection, or marine services environment.
  • Current dive medical examination from a physician trained or certified in hyperbaric medicine (within 12 months).
  • Current First Aid, CPR/AED, and ADCI-compliant Oxygen Provider certification.
  • Ability to pass a pre-employment physical and drug and alcohol screening.
  • Valid driver's license; willingness to travel extensively including to OCONUS locations.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain required security clearances and federal installation access credentials.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • ADCI Senior Diver or Diver/Tender certification.
  • Underwater cutting and burning certification (oxy-arc or equivalent).
  • Underwater welding certification (AWS D3.6 or equivalent).
  • Experience performing NAVFAC, USACE, or USCG contract dive work.
  • Non-destructive testing (NDT) awareness training; underwater inspection experience.
  • Completion of accredited commercial diving program (ADCI member school preferred).

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
This position requires exceptional physical fitness and the ability to perform demanding underwater and topside construction work in variable and high-hazard marine environments. A current hyperbaric medical clearance from a qualified physician is required and must be maintained throughout employment.
