Job Title: Transition Coordinator/ School Counselor
ย Location: Edison School Center Based Program
ย Employment Type: Full Time

Position Overview

We are seeking a dedicated and student-centered Special Education Teacher to support the academic, social, and emotional development of students. This role includes responsibilities in special education support, and serving as a Transition Coordinator to assist students in preparing for post-secondary success, High School Credit Analysis and other duties as directed by the program supervisor.

Key Responsibilities

Assessment & Evaluation

  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to determine eligibility and appropriate services
  • Use data to inform instructional strategies and interventions

IEP Participation & Compliance

  • Attend and actively participate in Individualized Education Program (IEP) meetings
  • Provide clear explanations of assessment results to families and staff
  • Assist in developing measurable goals and appropriate accommodations
  • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and district special education regulations

Transition Coordination

  • Serve as Transition Coordinator for students ages 14-26
  • Develop and implement transition plans in collaboration with special education teachers aligned with student goals for post-secondary education, employment, and independent living
  • Collaborate with community agencies, vocational programs, and post-secondary institutions
  • Support students and families in navigating transition resources and services
  • Analyze and perform credit analysis for all High School Students

Consultation & Collaboration

  • Partner with teachers, administrators, and families to support student success
  • Provide consultation on behavioral, academic, and social-emotional concerns
  • Contribute to a positive, inclusive school climate

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's Degree in special education from an accredited institution.

  • A minimum of 3 years of satisfactory teaching experience in special or vocational education.

  • Preferred experience in transition planning, youth employment, and vocational assessment of students with special needs.

  • ย ย ย ย Requirements as defined in the Michigan Administrative Rules of Special Education and through Oakland Schools Plan for delivery of special education programs and services.

  • Demonstrate an ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
  • An ability to relate well to others and use good interpersonal skills.
  • Knowledge of behavior management techniques, writing behavior intervention plans, functional behavior analysis, and implementing positive behavioral supports.
  • Knowledge of and/or willingness to develop skills in Crisis Prevention Institute (CPI techniques), Applied Behavior Analysis, and other similar programs will be helpful.
  • Experience with students with behavioral challenges be helpful.

  • Experience working with diverse student populations
  • Familiarity with IEP management systems
  • Ability to manage multiple responsibilities and deadlines
  • Knowledge of evidence-based interventions and practices
