Title: Android Test Automation Engineer
Location: Redmond, WA
Purpose of the Team:
  • The purpose is to support Project Solara a chip-to-cloud platform for agent-first devices, developed within the Applied Sciences Group by ensuring software quality and stability across concept reference devices during the internal self-host (dogfood) program, in which hundreds of employees are already using these devices in their daily workflows.

Key projects:
  • This role will contribute to writing and maintaining automated test suites, which provision, configure, and run software on prototype Android devices, and ensuring software quality by preventing defects before release across builds for the Project Solara device family.

Explain a typical day in the role:
  • Develop, maintain, and expand unit and component-level tests for Android applications to improve reliability, regression coverage, and overall product quality.
  • Maintain and operate a physical Android device test lab, including device provisioning, configuration, software updates, connectivity, inventory, and test readiness.
  • Partner with the Senior Android SDET to integrate tests with the existing automation framework and CI/CD pipelines, improve test reliability, and investigate automated test failures.
  • Identify coverage gaps and high-risk areas, contribute to test planning, and prioritize regression testing based on product changes and telemetry.
  • Troubleshoot product and test issues by reproducing defects, collecting and analyzing device logs, crash data, and telemetry, validating fixes, supporting release readiness, and documenting test procedures and quality results.

What is the ideal background of a candidate for this role?
  • The ideal candidate will have a software engineering or software engineering in test background, with hands-on experience designing, implementing, and maintaining automated test suites that provision, configure, and run software on physical devices.
  • They should be comfortable writing code, debugging software issues, analyzing test failures, working with device provisioning and on-device automation, and collaborating closely with engineering teams.
  • Experience with test automation frameworks, CI/CD pipelines, prototype device validation, and release validation is strongly preferred.
  • Because the Project Solara device family runs on AOSP-based enterprise OS prior Android / AOSP platform and on-device test automation experience is a significant advantage.

What are unique selling points that would get candidates interested in your role over another?:
  • This role offers the opportunity to work on Project Solara, newly announced agent-first device platform from the Applied Sciences Group and the software that powers it.
  • Candidates get direct, hands-on exposure to early prototype Android devices (such as the portable Badge and in-place Desk), building automation that provisions, configures, and validates software directly on real hardware across active development builds.
  • They will join a strong engineering team with experienced technical leaders, a collaborative culture, and meaningful support for learning the product, automation systems, and device workflows on a brand-new class of computing.

Top Must-Have HARD Skills & years of experience for each:
  • Software engineering - 5+ years
  • Software automated testing, specifically Android Test Automation (provisioning, configuring, and running software on physical/prototype devices) - 1+ years
  • Ability to independently drive technical work and deliver value - 3+ years
  • Experience with Android/Kotlin or C++ or other strongly-typed languages

Thanks
