ABOUT DLS
Diagnostic Laboratory Services, Inc. (DLS) is Hawaii's largest locally owned and operated clinical and anatomic pathology laboratory. DLS is proud to serve the communities of Hawaii, Guam and Saipan and utilizes state-of-the-art testing and value-based informatics to promote optimal patient care to positively impact patient lives.
SCHEDULE
Part-Time Position (30-39 hours per week)
Must be available Monday through Friday from 8:00 am to 8:00 pm and Saturday from 9:00n am to 2:30 pm. Must be flexible with schedule changes to meet operational needs.
HIRING RANGE
$17.75 to $19.81 hourly
Actual pay commensurate with experience
JOB SUMMARY
Independently operates company vehicle to transport laboratory specimens, reports, supplies and other items with aloha. Ensures that all items are picked up and delivered to designated locations in a safe and timely manner.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Listed below are the major duties and responsibilities of this position. Essential job functions are identified with an *.

  • Operates company vehicle in a safe and defensive manner to pick up and deliver laboratory specimens, medical records and medical supplies to and from DLS locations and other medical facilities. Follows traffic laws accordingly. (90%)*

  • Prepares and organizes items for delivery to sites and clients and inspects vehicle prior to leaving base location.
  • Utilizes specimen tracking system to document pick-up and delivery details and ensures all items reach the appropriate destination.
  • Communicates accordingly with dispatch and/or management to reports issues that occur on routes that may impact pick-up and delivery schedules.
  • Keeps management updated on the operational condition and appearance of the vehicle.
  • Relays information from clients to appropriate department.
  • Responds to STAT (priority/immediate) pick-ups as needed.

  • May perform the following duties as needed. (10%)*

  • Monitors and schedules maintenance of vehicle.
  • Handles packing and/or shipping of specimens according to International Air Transport Association (IATA) requirements.
  • Responds to phone calls for requests such as, but not limited to, patient results, supplies, and mail.
  • Obtains supplies such as dry ice, office products, etc. Unpacks and stores supplies.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

JOB DEMANDS
Typical Physical Demands:
  • Moderate physical activity performing somewhat strenuous daily activities.
  • Requires clear vision at twenty (20) inches or less and twenty (20) feet or more, peripheral vision and depth perception.
  • Able to lift, carry, pushing or pull items weighing up to thirty five (35) pounds frequently.
  • Able to use hand trucks.
  • Depending on work location:
    • Able to walk and/or use stairs up to six (6) hours frequently.
    • Able to drive and get in/out of vehicle up to six (6) hours frequently.

Typical Working Conditions:
  • Work environment includes conditions common to a hospital/laboratory environment, including working directly with potentially hazardous chemicals and/or patients with communicable diseases. Potential for inadvertent skin, eye, mucous membrane, or parenteral contact with blood or other infectious materials.
  • Works primarily in an outdoor environment, with varied weather conditions.

QUALIFICATIONS
Education:
Preferred:
  • High school diploma or equivalent.

Experience:
Required:
  • Two (2) years driving experience with full license (not provisional or intermediate).

Preferred:
  • Patient care, medical laboratory or equivalent public contact experience.

Skills:
  • Ability to communicate effectively in English both in verbal and written form.
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and with a team.
  • Excellent customer service skills.
  • Exhibit effective decision making with good judgement.
  • Attention to detail.
  • Knowledge of traffic rules/laws.

  • Valid driver's license and a current, clean traffic abstract
