Job description

Under the general supervision of the Sr. Director or designee, the Assistant Safety System Technician supports installation, repair, operation, and testing or equipment used in supervised fire detection, notification and suppression systems throughout the University Campus.


  • Support installations, maintenance, troubleshooting and repairs building life-safety equipment and systems, including addressable networked fire alarm systems, suppression systems and central station monitoring equipment.
  • Performs inspection, testing and maintenance in accordance with applicable standards and requirements of the National Fire Protection Association, Local/State codes, and other compliance requirements of the Authority Having Jurisdiction.
  • Assist in the inspection and testing of systems including fire alarms, extinguishers and suppression systems, elevators, and hydrants.
  • Interface with other departments to ensure work is completed with the least possible disruption to UMass Chan. 
  • Researching and ordering parts, maintaining warranty information.
  • Participating in project reviews and final completion of turnover.
  • Assist in monitoring activities of any outside contractors.

  • Perform preventive maintenance inspections, documents time and material consumed in performance of this work.
  • While in the performance of routine duties; it may be required, as needed to perform all work associated with all maintenance trades of an equal or lower graded classification, where the work or task does not require a specific license.
  • Conform to codes, rules, regulations, and safety standards associated with the trade.
  • Interprets and updates plans, drawings and prints as necessary.
  • Must be able to use a computerized maintenance management system (CMMS) for work assignments.
  • Complete appropriate documentation ensuring accuracy of data for accreditation and compliance purposes.
  • Ensure materials and equipment requirements are at the site to complete work in an efficient manner. 
  • Maintain spare parts inventory and anticipate future needs. 
  • Assist in training new employees of lower or equal classification.
  • Attend all required training.
  • Perform other duties as required.

Required:

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Minimum two years of experience installing or maintaining building fire alarm systems, central station fire alarm monitoring, and suppression systems.
  • Effective communication skills; verbal and written.
  • Ability to use electronic devices, such as an iPad.
  • Knowledge of hazards and safety precautions as they pertain to the construction trades.
  • Valid drivers license and ability to travel to off-site locations.

Preferred:

  • Working knowledge of NFPA 72
  • Experience with Simplex TrueSite and addressable/networked systems

Environmental Working Conditions:

• May perform work in all Medical Center facilities and is subject to possible exposure to chemicals, gases, electrical shock.

• Ability to perform physically arduous tasks.

• Normal dexterity, visual acuity, ability to lift up to 50 lbs., ability to climb and work from ladders and scaffolding, and work in confined areas.

• Must be able to pass a respirator fit test or don a PAPR hood.
