Job description

19th February, 2026
Our client, a leader in aerospace simulation, is seeking a Mechanical Design Engineer to join their advanced team in Southampton, PA.
They design and build high-fidelity aircrew cockpits and aerospace motion simulation systems - fully functional, multi-axis robotic platforms used in professional aerospace and defense training. These platforms are not static enclosures, they replicate real-world aircraft dynamics through complex, integrated mechanical systems. Think motion rigs on the scale of Mission: SPACE in EPCOT, or the astronaut centrifuge systems often depicted in films, where structural weldments, sheet metal, multi-axis drives, planetary gearboxes, pneumatic actuation, sensors, and electromechanical components all work together in assemblies exceeding 15,000 parts.
In this role, you'll design across multiple subsystems - developing motion mechanisms, specifying gearboxes and drives, optimizing structural frames for stiffness-to-weight performance, and breaking large assemblies into manufacturable subassemblies. You'll integrate commercial off-the-shelf components with custom-designed parts, collaborate closely with in-house fabrication teams, coordinate with vendors, and support prototyping and testing to ensure designs perform as intended.
If you're an engineer who enjoys dynamic machinery, robotics, and systems-level design - and who thrives on variety and technical challenge rather than repetitive product iteration - this role offers broad technical exposure and meaningful engineering ownership.
Key Responsibilities
  • Design and develop large-scale mechanical assemblies for motion-enabled cockpits and aerospace simulation platforms
  • Engineer multi-axis motion systems, including planetary gearboxes, DC/AC drives, couplings, and supporting structural frames
  • Develop pneumatic actuation systems and integrate electro-mechanical components to achieve precise motion control
  • Design structural weldments, sheet metal assemblies, and dynamic mechanisms for motion fidelity and structural integrity
  • Break complex assemblies into manufacturable subassemblies, ensuring clarity for internal fabrication and vendor production
  • Select, evaluate, and integrate commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) components alongside custom-designed mechanisms
  • Conduct design analysis for weight optimization, load-bearing performance, and motion system dynamics
  • Generate and maintain bills of materials (BOMs), technical drawings, and CAD documentation within collaborative Vault environments
  • Collaborate closely with in-house fabrication teams, external vendors, and cross-functional engineering teams to resolve design, assembly, and manufacturability challenges
  • Participate in design reviews, providing constructive technical feedback and iterative improvements
  • Support prototyping, testing, and refinement of motion platforms and subsystems during build and assembly
Requirements
  • 7+ years of mechanical design experience in complex, multi-subsystem environments
  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, Robotics, or related field
  • Experience designing motion systems, robotics, and dynamic mechanisms
  • Strong knowledge of pneumatic actuation, electro-mechanical drives, and gearboxes
  • Proficiency in structural weldments and sheet metal design for dynamic loads
  • Experience managing large assemblies and creating manufacturable subassemblies
  • Skilled in integrating commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) components with custom designs
  • Proficiency in Autodesk Inventor or other collaborative CAD tools
  • Understanding of GD&T and manufacturing processes
  • Comfortable collaborating with fabrication teams, vendors, and cross-functional engineers
Location: Southampton, PA - Onsite
Benefits: Medical, Dental, Vision, HSA/FSA, 401(k) with company match, PTO, Basic Life Insurance, Long-Term Disability, Work-Life Balance, Quarterly Employee Events, Tuition Assistance, and Continuing Education
