The Risk and Claims Manager is responsible for the oversight and activities of a team of claims professionals in our Loss Control department. This position will also be responsible for monitoring and analyzing company and industry-wide trends related to claims frequency to find ways to reduce risk exposure for the business. This position is full-time, in-person, at our corporate headquarters with occasional trips to our other locations.
Responsibilities of Position:
  • Responsible for the overall planning, development, direction, and administration of claims handling
  • Manage the claims team to ensure claims are progressing appropriately and in a timely manner
  • Provide technical guidance and direction to team members
  • Offer expert advice to team members on complex claim file management and extend settlement authority following comprehensive reviews. Submit recommendations to Assistant General Counsel for Claims and Litigation on cases exceeding personal authority
  • Review complex and high-exposure claims, provide expert guidance on resolution strategies, and exercise settlement authority within approved limits. Present recommendations to the Assistant General Counsel - Claims & Litigation for matters exceeding assigned authority
  • Support business continuity and catastrophe response planning for large-scale or catastrophic loss events, including coordination with TPAs and consulting experts
  • Analyze historical claim data and trends, both company and industry-wide, to develop and present actionable risk-reduction recommendations to leadership
  • Utilize databases and dashboards to evaluate trends in the claims handling process and opportunities for improvement
  • Assist with the development and recommendation for implementation of loss control policies and procedures
  • Partner with corporate and regional safety, operations, and HR teams to design, implement, and measure loss-control programs, safety policies, training, and corrective actions
  • Monitor the safety databases for opportunities to improve data collection and workflow and work with IT team to address performance issues with databases
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Supervisory Responsibility:
  • This position will manage 1-5 employees
  • This position will not oversee and direct other managers

Skills & Abilities Needed for Position:
  • Exceptional customer service skills to be able to communicate effectively and professionally
  • Must have excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong analytical and reporting skills
  • Proven leadership, development, and team management skills
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills with strong attention to detail
  • Proficiency in using databases such as Power-BI

Experience & Knowledge Needed for Position:
  • 10 years of experience in commercial auto property damage and bodily injury claims is required
  • A minimum of 5 years direct claim team management experience is required
  • Substantial experience with insurance principles, practices, and terminology of loss reduction and loss control, as well as claims management, claims adjusting, reserving, and subrogation
  • Bachelor's degree in Business Administration, Risk Management and Insurance, Finance, or a related field

Physical Requirements in a Regular Workday:
  • Occasionally lifting/carrying a max of 10 lbs
  • Rarely pushing/pulling a max of 10 lbs
  • Rarely working outside
  • Continuously sitting
  • Rarely standing/walking

Additional Working Conditions/Aspects:
  • Ability to travel between offices, as required
  • Ability to work flexible hours; expected to work nights and weekends as needed
  • Ability to work overtime, weekends, and/or holidays
  • Legally eligible to work in the United States
  • Valid driver's license (if applicable)
  • Must successfully complete pre-employment testing
  • Must be able to read and speak the English language
