Job description

Position Title:             Special Education Paraprofessional

Location:                    Lincoln Elementary School
Classification:             C2

Report to/Evaluated by:      Building Principal

Schedule:            Monday-Friday, 5.5 hours per day (part-time)
Rate of Pay:         $19.26 per hour

Summary

Assists special education and regular education students and teachers with daily activities and student management.

Essential Duties

  • Assist teacher in routine classroom operation, management, one-on-one and small group instruction.
  • Assist in preparing planned instructional materials, attendance reports, and class reports.
  • Supervises students involved in non-classroom activities as directed.
  • Follow teacher instructions of classroom procedures, reinforcement, philosophy, and consistency.
  • Make appropriate referrals when difficulties arise and teacher is not readily available.
  • Assist with classroom management duties such as inventory, bulletin boards, and collecting money.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of individual students' problems.
  • Assist with classroom record keeping, write lessons on the board, correct student work and student assessments.
  • Assist students with special physical needs such as toileting, movement, and vision.
  • Assist teacher with implementation of approved curriculum.
  • Take in-service training as provided in accordance with contract.
  • Assist teacher on curriculum, classroom management, and occasional class trips.
  • Additional duties associated with the classification may be assigned as needed.

Supervisory Responsibility

All school employees have some responsibility for supervising students and assisting in maintaining a safe environment at all times.

Qualification Requirements

Education and Experience

  • High school graduate or equivalent (GED)  required;
  • Completion of at least two years of study at an accredited institution of higher education (equal to 60 semester hours); or
  • Associates Degree (or higher) from an accredited institution; or
  • Pass the ETS Parapro Assessment with a score of 460; or
  • Pass the WorkKeys with a score of a 4 in Reading for Information; a 4 in Applied Math; and a 3 in Writing.
  • Ability to read orally with focus on expression to students.
  • Previous experience with physically, emotionally, or mentally impaired students.

Language Skills

  • Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos.
  • Ability to write simple correspondence.
  • Ability to effectively read, write, and present information in one-on-one and small group situations to students, staff, and parents.

Mathematical Skills

  • Ability to perform operations using units of American money.
  • Ability to apply basic mathematical concepts.

Reasoning Ability

  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.
  • Ability to meet deadlines with and be flexible in accommodating scheduled activities/events during their shift.
  • Ability to deal with problems in accordance with building and district discipline policy.
  • Ability to develop effective working relationships with students, staff, and the school community.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to perform duties with awareness of all district requirements and Board of Education policies.

  • The employee needs to be able to tell where a sound is coming from and hear in a noisy environment.
