Manager Radiation Effects Engineer information

What is a manager radiation effects engineer?

A Manager Radiation Effects Engineer is a professional who oversees teams that evaluate and mitigate the impact of radiation on electronic systems, often in aerospace, defense, or nuclear industries. They are responsible for managing projects that test, analyze, and ensure the reliability of electronic components exposed to various radiation environments. This role involves both technical expertise in radiation effects and leadership skills to guide engineers and coordinate with other departments. Their work helps ensure that systems function safely and effectively under radiation exposure, such as in space or nuclear facilities.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a manager radiation effects engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Manager Radiation Effects Engineer, you need a strong background in electrical engineering, physics, or a related field, with expertise in radiation effects on electronics and experience in team leadership. Familiarity with radiation testing tools, simulation software (such as SPICE or GEANT4), and industry certifications (like IEEE or ASTM standards) is typically required. Strong problem-solving, communication, and project management skills help you lead teams, coordinate projects, and work with cross-functional stakeholders. These skills are critical to ensuring the reliability and safety of electronic systems in radiation-prone environments, meeting project goals, and maintaining high standards of quality and compliance.

What are some common challenges faced by a manager radiation effects engineer, and how can they be addressed?

A Manager Radiation Effects Engineer often faces challenges such as balancing project deadlines with rigorous testing requirements, staying updated on evolving industry standards, and coordinating multidisciplinary teams. Effective communication with both engineering and management teams is essential to ensure that radiation testing and mitigation strategies align with project goals. Staying proactive about ongoing training and leveraging simulation tools can help address technical complexities and regulatory changes, while fostering a culture of collaboration supports smoother project execution.

What is the difference between Manager Radiation Effects Engineer vs Radiation Effects Engineer?

AspectManager Radiation Effects EngineerRadiation Effects Engineer
CredentialsTypically requires a bachelor's or master's in engineering or physics, with leadership experienceRequires a bachelor's or master's in engineering, physics, or related field
Work EnvironmentLeads teams, manages projects, and collaborates with cross-functional departmentsFocuses on technical analysis, testing, and modeling of radiation effects
Industry UsageUsed in aerospace, defense, and electronics industries for leadership rolesCommonly employed in research labs, R&D, and technical departments

The main difference is that the Manager Radiation Effects Engineer oversees teams and projects, while the Radiation Effects Engineer focuses on technical analysis and testing. Both roles require expertise in radiation effects, but the manager role emphasizes leadership and project management.

Precise Systems is seeking a dedicated Radome Engineer to support airborne radar and antenna system performance efforts. This full-time, regular position is ideal for an engineer with experience in RF test design, radome analysis, and electromagnetic performance evaluation within a dynamic DoD environment. In this role, you will support the development, execution, and analysis of RF test methodologies used to evaluate radome and antenna system performance. You will work closely with systems, test, and integration teams to ensure RF performance meets mission and platform requirements. Your technical expertise in RF measurement, data analysis, and test design will be critical in identifying performance impacts and improving overall system effectiveness.

This role requires in-person support.

Duties:

  • Develop and execute RF test plans for radome characterization, including insertion loss, transmission efficiency, boresight error, phase distortion, and polarization effects
  • Design and implement far-field and near-field RF test procedures in anechoic chamber environments
  • Utilize RF test equipment such as Vector Network Analyzer, Spectrum Analyzer, and signal generators to evaluate system performance
  • Analyze radome impacts on antenna radiation patterns, beam steering, and overall RF system effectiveness
  • Support electromagnetic modeling and simulation using tools such as ANSYS HFSS and CST Studio Suite
  • Correlate simulated and measured RF performance and perform sensitivity and trade studies
  • Develop and support RF test fixture conceptual designs and measurement setups
  • Conduct data analysis, error budgeting, and root cause investigations for RF anomalies and performance degradation
  • Support Systems Engineering Technical Review (SETR) events, including SRR, PDR, CDR, and TRR
  • Coordinate across engineering, test, and program teams to support integration and test activities
  • Lead or support environmental and operational RF performance evaluations (temperature, structural, and weather effects)

Desired Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, RF Engineering, Physics, or related technical field

Desired Experience:

  • Minimum three (3) years of experience in RF engineering, antenna systems, or radome performance evaluation
  • Experience with RF Test Design experience (Power Level / Transmission Loss, Boresight Error, Phase Error / Distortion, Polarization) and execution, including Far Field RF testing in anechoic chambers
  • Hands-on experience with RF measurement equipment (e.g., VNA, spectrum analyzers)
  • Experience analyzing RF parameters such as transmission loss, phase error, polarization, and boresight error
  • Familiarity with Test Fixture conceptual design
  • Familiarity with Systems Engineering Technical Review (SETR) processes
  • Ability to lead people and coordinate efforts

Preferred Experience:

  • Experience supporting airborne radar or antenna systems (P-8 or similar ISR platforms preferred)
