Oncology Registered Nurse (RN)

The Oncology Registered Nurse (RN) serves as a vital liaison between providers, patients, families, outside treatment facilities, and interdisciplinary team members. This role integrates patient education, telephone triage, provider support, care coordination, and clinical facilitation to ensure high-quality, evidence-based oncology care.

The RN supports patients across the continuum of care, including treatment planning, symptom management, survivorship preparation, medication coordination, and follow-up care. This position promotes service excellence, operational efficiency, regulatory compliance, and adherence to Michiana Hematology-Oncology (MHO) standards.

Essential Functions And Job Responsibilities

Clinical Care & Patient Support

  • Perform comprehensive telephone triage assessments using oncology knowledge and approved standing orders.
  • Develop, implement, and document individualized plans of care in collaboration with providers.
  • Provide symptom management guidance and patient interventions as appropriate.
  • Perform clinical duties including dressing changes, port draws, IV fluids, and assistance during emergent situations.
  • Assist with medication refills per standing orders; forward controlled substance requests to the prescribing provider.
  • Send appropriate anti-emetics and chemotherapy-related medications to pharmacy per treatment plan.
  • Support survivorship planning by preparing materials for survivorship appointments.
  • Collaborate with follow-up programs to assess patient tolerance post-treatment (2–3 days after therapy).

Care Coordination & Facilitation

  • Serve as liaison between MHO providers and outside treatment facilities administering therapy.
  • Ensure accurate transmission and documentation of orders in Mosaiq, including dosing and scheduling accuracy.
  • Assist in development and implementation of care plans.
  • Coordinate new treatment starts according to physician orders.
  • Review and coordinate insurance authorizations and outpatient orders.
  • Act as liaison to resolve insurance and reimbursement issues in collaboration with appropriate departments.
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of chemotherapy billing and reimbursement procedures.
  • Support value-based care initiatives and process improvement efforts.

Provider & Administrative Support

  • Review labs, letters, and documents for provider review.
  • Identify urgent documents requiring immediate provider attention.
  • Enter care plans into EMR systems based on provider orders.
  • Assist with medication refill documentation and provider approval workflows.
  • Utilize technology and innovative methodologies to enhance patient and provider workflows.
  • Support quality improvement initiatives and operational enhancements.

Documentation & Compliance

  • Document all patient interactions, assessments, interventions, and care plans accurately and timely.
  • Ensure compliance with HIPAA, OSHA, and all governing regulatory agencies.
  • Maintain strict confidentiality and professional discretion.
  • Adhere to MHO policies, procedures, and standards of excellence.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Current State of Indiana Registered Nurse (RN) License required.
  • Oncology experience preferred.
  • Chemo/ONS certification highly desirable.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office and electronic medical records (Mosaiq experience preferred).
  • Strong understanding of oncology treatment regimens and symptom management.
  • Excellent communication, organizational, and documentation skills.
  • Strong clinical judgment and critical thinking abilities.
