Manager Radar Engineer information

What does a Manager Radar Engineer do?

A Manager Radar Engineer oversees a team of radar engineers responsible for the design, development, testing, and maintenance of radar systems. They coordinate projects, manage timelines and budgets, and ensure technical requirements are met. In addition to technical leadership, they also handle personnel management tasks such as hiring, training, and performance reviews. Their role is crucial in ensuring that radar systems meet safety, reliability, and performance standards for applications in defense, aviation, weather forecasting, and more.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Manager Radar Engineer?

To thrive as a Manager Radar Engineer, you need a solid background in electrical engineering, radar system design, and project management, typically supported by a relevant engineering degree and proven industry experience. Familiarity with simulation tools like MATLAB, radar signal processing software, and knowledge of compliance standards or certifications such as IEEE are commonly required. Strong leadership, effective communication, and problem-solving skills help in leading teams and liaising with stakeholders. These skills ensure successful development, integration, and management of complex radar projects while fostering innovation and team performance.

What are some common challenges faced by Manager Radar Engineers when leading multidisciplinary teams?

Manager Radar Engineers often oversee teams composed of hardware, software, and systems engineers, which can present communication and coordination challenges. Balancing technical leadership with administrative responsibilities—such as project scheduling, resource allocation, and stakeholder management—requires strong organizational and interpersonal skills. Additionally, staying updated with rapidly evolving radar technologies while ensuring compliance with industry standards can be demanding. Successful managers foster collaboration, encourage knowledge sharing, and implement structured processes to navigate these challenges effectively.

What is the difference between Manager Radar Engineer vs Radar Systems Engineer?

AspectManager Radar EngineerRadar Systems Engineer
CredentialsBachelor's or Master's in Electrical Engineering, Radar Technology, or related fields; often includes leadership trainingBachelor's or Master's in Electrical Engineering, Radar Technology, or related fields
Work EnvironmentLeads teams, manages projects, collaborates with cross-functional departmentsDesigns, develops, tests radar systems; works primarily in R&D or engineering teams
Industry UsageUsed in defense, aerospace, and technology companies for overseeing radar projectsUsed in similar industries for technical development and system integration

The main difference is that a Manager Radar Engineer focuses on team leadership, project management, and strategic oversight, while a Radar Systems Engineer concentrates on technical design, development, and testing of radar systems. Both roles require similar technical credentials, but their responsibilities and focus areas differ significantly.

Job description

We are seeking an ADAS Sensing Systems Validation Engineer to validate and continuously improve the performance of advanced driver-assistance sensing systems across Ford's full vehicle lineup. In this role, you will develop and execute rigorous design validation methods to ensure proper sensing performance at the component, system, and vehicle level-accounting for diverse environmental conditions and cross-carline variability. You will also play a key role in defining use cases, functional requirements, and performance targets for ADAS sensing systems.
Success in this role depends on strong cross-functional collaboration, partnering with Hardware/Software teams, Systems Engineering, and Suppliers to keep verification and validation (V&V) activities aligned with broader project goals. This position also requires strong systems-level thinking to develop and refine test methods that ensure consistent sensing performance across Ford's entire vehicle portfolio. In addition, you will identify opportunities to apply HIL and CAE methodologies for platform and sensor verification, and champion continuous improvement of V&V processes by integrating industry best practices and emerging technologies.
Responsibilities
  • Develop, refine, and execute design validation methods to ensure sensing system performance at the component, system, and vehicle levels across diverse environmental and cross-carline noise factors.
  • Support the development, design, and verification of use cases, functional-level requirements, and targets for ADAS sensing systems.
  • Support upgrades and enhancements to ADAS sensing systems by collaborating with feature owners on modeling changes, regression testing, test vector support, data review, issue identification, and supplier coordination.
  • Develop and improve system- and subsystem-level designs, interfaces, and specifications to ensure consistent sensing system performance across the full range of Ford vehicle offerings.
  • Ensure system design, failure mode analysis, functional safety, and related deliverables enable seamless integration with existing features while delivering an exceptional user experience.
  • Support the development of data analysis techniques and methods for sensing system data generated across various test environments (SIL/HIL/Bench/Vehicle) to meet performance specifications.
  • Coordinate with cross-functional teams-including Software Development, Program Management, Systems Engineering, and Suppliers-to align verification and validation (V&V) activities with overall project goals.
  • Identify and implement opportunities to leverage HIL and CAE methods for ADAS platform and sensor performance verification.
  • Drive continuous improvement of V&V processes and methodologies by applying industry best practices and emerging technologies to enhance efficiency and effectiveness.

Qualifications
You'll have...
Basic Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Robotics, Controls, Aerospace Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field
  • 2+ years of validation/test engineering experience in a professional or educational setting (any combination)
  • Experience with data collection and analysis in laboratory, HIL, and vehicle test environments
  • General knowledge of or experience developing/testing features and sensing systems in the ADAS domain, using radars, cameras, lidars, ultrasonic sensors, or related vehicle systems (body, electrical, chassis, powertrain)
  • Proven technical skills using Vector, CANalyzer, and CANape tools
  • Strong analytical and creative problem-solving skills

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Robotics, Controls, Aerospace Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field
  • Experience leading the validation and verification of ADAS sensing systems
  • Experience with computer vision and radar tracking of humans, vehicles, static roadway obstacles, or other typical road objects
  • Experience with computer vision detection and tracking of signs, lights, lanes, and other key artifacts
  • Understanding of embedded hardware and software design
  • Experience reviewing, categorizing, and analyzing field data to determine error states/failure modes
  • Experience developing, conducting, observing, and reporting on statistically relevant verification and validation methods across the global population
  • Experience with MobilEye EyeQ technology
  • Exposure to vehicle attribute development (Vehicle Dynamics, NVH, Package, Performance/FE, etc.)
  • Experience in project management and/or an integration role, leading and directing other team members
  • Experience with failure mode analysis techniques
  • Understanding of Kalman filtering, vehicle dynamics, and linear/nonlinear control methods
  • Software engineering and algorithm development experience in any language (e.g., C, C++, Python, MATLAB)
