Job description

The group you'll be a part of
In the Global Products Group, we are dedicated to excellence in the design and engineering of Lam's etch and deposition products. We drive innovation to ensure our cutting-edge solutions are helping to solve the biggest challenges in the semiconductor industry.
The impact you'll make
As a Mechanical Engineer at Lam, you're designing and defining cutting-edge mechanical and electro-mechanical systems. Your role involves feasibility studies, testing, and guiding teams in detailed design and fabrication. You provide the crucial design information needed to shape our technology's packaging.
In this role, you will directly contribute to the Deposition Product Group.
What you'll do
  • Support the full life cycle of mechanical and electro-mechanical systems from concept to productization including conceptualization, designing, CAD modeling, development, and test/validation.
  • Designs components using variety of metals, ceramics, quartz, plastics, and advanced coatings.
  • Ensure documentation aligns with SEMI, Lam standards, and industry best practices for geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T).
  • Conduct detailed analysis including structural, finite element analysis (FEA), thermal, heat transfer, stress, vibrations, fluid and gas flow dynamics, and manufacturability to properly specify designs.
  • Develop and conduct feasibility studies and test plans to characterize and validate design performance.
  • Prepare high-quality reports and technical presentations to clearly communicate design intent, evaluation, and validation to a diverse audience in design reviews.
  • Collaborate with suppliers and internal teams to ensure solutions can be manufactured with high-quality, cost-optimized, and to requirements.
  • Provide key deliverables including Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEA), technical specifications, risk analysis, test specifications, and design review presentations.
  • Provide technical guidance and mentoring to more junior engineers

What you'll do continued
  • Perform advanced thermal-fluid analysis including CFD modeling for gas/vapor delivery systems, heat transfer, and multiphase flows to support design optimization and failure mitigation
  • Develop and validate thermal management strategies for components and subsystems operating under vacuum, high-temperature, or reactive gas environments
  • Lead cross-disciplinary design integration involving mechanical, controls, firmware, and system engineering teams to ensure robust system-level performance
  • Apply first-principles thermodynamics and fluid mechanics to guide architecture decisions, component sizing, and system trade-offs
  • Define and execute correlation between simulation (CFD/FEA) and experimental data, including test design, instrumentation, and performance validation
  • Support root cause analysis of field or test issues involving flow instability, thermal gradients, or control interactions
  • Collaborate with EE/controls teams to ensure mechanical system compatibility with control systems, including sensor placement, response times, and system dynamics
  • Contribute to system-level design reviews with emphasis on coupled thermal-fluid-control behavior

Who we're looking for
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field with 8+ years of experience; or Master's degree with 6+ years' experience; or equivalent experience.
  • Excellent communication, both written and verbal, and technical presentation skills.
  • Highly proficient in 3D CAD tools such as CREO, Siemens NX, ProE, SolidWorks, and others.
  • Hands-on experimental and design background coupled with solid engineering skills.
  • Strong background in computational fluid dynamics (CFD) tools (e.g., ANSYS Fluent/CFX, Star-CCM+, COMSOL) for internal flow, heat transfer, and gas delivery systems
  • Deep understanding of thermodynamics, heat transfer, and fluid mechanics, with ability to apply first-principles analysis to complex systems
  • Experience with thermal modeling and validation in vacuum systems, gas delivery, or semiconductor/process equipment preferred
  • Familiarity with control systems fundamentals, including PID control, system response, stability, and interaction with physical hardware
  • Working knowledge of firmware (FW) interaction with hardware systems, including how sensors, actuators, and control loops are implemented and debugged
  • Experience across the full product lifecycle: concept development, design, prototyping, validation, and high-volume manufacturing support (reinforces standard requirement)
  • Ability to interpret and influence system-level behavior, not just component-level design (strong systems thinking mindset)
  • Experience with coupled multiphysics problems (thermal + flow + structural + controls) is highly desirable

Preferred qualifications
  • Experience in Semiconductor industry is a plus.
  • Experience in leading projects, or problem solving while managing time and multiple priorities.
