The Leonardo DRS Naval Power Systems business is a trusted provider of innovative naval gas and hybrid power systems, control technology and support solutions for the U.S. Navy and navies around the world.
Job Summary
DRS NPS has an immediate need for a Mechanical Engineer for a broad engineering role which includes a significant hand-on role in the commissioning of multi-million dollar precision assembly tooling and the subsequent use of that tooling in support of building and operationally testing multi-megawatt electric motors, generators, and steam turbines.
This individual will evaluate and recommend design approaches to meet production requirements for new or improved products and investigate solutions to product or process problems. The candidate is expected to be able to work independently while leveraging expert knowledge from others inside the company to make complex decisions
Direct experience with large (1MW+) power generation or propulsion equipment, motor or turbine assembly and manufacturing processes, and previous US military program experience are considered to be distinct advantages. Experience in two or more of the following areas is ideal for this role:
  • Engineering Design & Verification
  • Manufacturing Engineering
  • Operations Oversight / Management
  • Supplier Oversight
  • Quality Engineering

Job Responsibilities
  • Support assembly of large (1MW+) motors at DRS's production and test facility in Goose Creek (Charleston), SC.
  • Provide clarification and/or direction to suppliers as appropriate in support of motor assembly
  • Evaluate and disposition non-conformances during the manufacturing process
  • Technical review of supplier's proposed processes and changes to previously successful processes
  • Cognizant technical engineer for suppliers' components/sub-systems
  • Technical review and/or independent verification of supplier's analyses
  • Occasional on-site support for at US Navy's test facility located in Philadelphia, PA
  • Component-level vendor visits to address issues and verify progress (< 10% travel required)
  • Confidently and competently represent DRS in front of customers, including the US Navy
  • Delivering on all project performance, quality, schedule, and budget objectives
  • Clearly communicating and presenting technical and programmatic information to technical and non-technical individuals

Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor of Science degree from a 4 year accredited college or university in Mechanical, Electrical or Manufacturing Engineering
  • 5+ years experience in an engineering role leading engineering project through successful completion of technical activities on time and budget
  • Strong analytical, mathematical, and problem solving capabilities
  • Knowledge / Experience with engineering tools (ANSYS, Unigraphics/NX, Windchill, Matlab)
  • Ability to acquire a secret level clearance

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with execution of programs for the US military
  • Familiarity with industrial and military design specifications
  • Experience in the manufacture of electric machines, electric motor/drive systems, electro-mechanical systems, or other rotating equipment
  • Specific experience with large (1MW+) permanent magnet electric machines

U.S. Citizenship required. This position may require an active DOD security clearance or the ability to obtain such clearance within a reasonable time after commencement of employment.
