Job description

Kratos has an exciting opportunity for a Mechanical Engineer II or III. The Mechanical Engineer role leverages expertise in Mechanical Engineering principles to define, analyze, and design mechanical systems, ensuring compliance with project objectives and stakeholder needs.

  • Designs and integrates complex mechanical systems and components digitally before physical production
  • Performs stress and structural design analysis, including assessing the strength, durability, and safety of components under various stress conditions
  • Generates and collaborates in drawings, electronic models, and documentation used for manufacturing, integration, and testing
  • Performs functional analysis to decompose high-level requirements into detailed functions and allocate them to mechanical system elements
  • Identifies and assesses potential risks associated with designs and their manufacture and proposes mitigation strategies
  • Liaison with process engineers, systems engineers, and simulator designers to ensure integration of mechanical systems is feasible and achievable

  • Proficiency in the interpretation and creation of technical drawings and 3D models using CAD, Model Based Design (MBD), interface control documents, requirements specifications, and system models
  • Experienced in design for manufacturing and knowledge of common manufacturing methods
  • Proficiency in principles of solid mechanics, hydraulics, and materials
  • Must possess a working knowledge of ASME Y14.1 and Y14.5 GD&T standards
  • Awareness of risk management processes
  • Strong computer skills and experience with standard office software.
  • BS degree in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering or a relevant technical field (significant work experience in mechanical design engineering may be substituted for education)
  • Minimum 2 years of experience in a combination of mechanical engineering and a related technical domain (e.g., simulation, building design, or the energy industry).

Preferred Skills/Experience

  • Experience with naval or industrial power plants
  • Licensed Structural Engineer, Professional Engineer or Engineering Intern/Engineer in Training (E.I or E.I.T) certificate
  • Experience with any combination of: Building Information Models (BIM), AutoDesk Revit, Deltek CostPoint, SolidWorks and SolidWorks PDM, Jama requirements management, TipQA
  • Proficiency in any combination of: HVAC, Fire Alarm and Suppression Systems (FASS), piping and valves, structural decking, industrial simulation
  • Knowledge and/or experience with relevant quality management systems (e.g., ISO 9001)
  • Experience with scripting languages (e.g., Python) for data analysis or automation
  • Experience in test planning and execution for complex systems
