What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Project Manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Project Manager, you need strong organizational, leadership, and problem-solving skills, often supported by a bachelor’s degree and experience in project management. Familiarity with project management software (like Microsoft Project, Asana, or Jira) and certifications such as PMP or PRINCE2 are commonly expected. Outstanding communication, negotiation, and adaptability set exceptional project managers apart. These skills and qualifications are crucial for delivering projects on time, within scope, and fostering effective teamwork.

What does a Project Manager do?

A Project Manager is responsible for planning, executing, and overseeing projects to ensure they are completed on time, within budget, and meet the required quality standards. They coordinate the efforts of team members, manage resources, and communicate with stakeholders throughout the project lifecycle. Project Managers also identify and mitigate risks, resolve issues, and ensure that project objectives are achieved according to the defined scope.

Job description

Field Operations Manager

Join One of South Jersey’s Premier Outdoor Living Companies

PCT Outdoor Living specializes in designing and building high-end outdoor living spaces, including custom decks, roof structures, pergolas, paver patios, and complete backyard transformations. We are committed to exceptional craftsmanship, professionalism, and delivering an outstanding customer experience.

As we continue to grow, we are looking for an experienced Field Operations Manager to become a key leader within our company.

This is not a desk job. We’re looking for someone who enjoys being in the field, leading crews, solving problems, communicating with homeowners, and ensuring every project is completed to the highest standard. The ideal candidate will be capable of taking ownership of our day-to-day operations while working directly alongside our team to keep projects running efficiently.

What You’ll Be Responsible For

  • Oversee multiple residential construction projects from start to finish.
  • Visit active jobsites daily to ensure projects are progressing safely, efficiently, and according to plan.
  • Lead and support field crews by answering construction questions and preventing costly mistakes.
  • Coordinate project schedules, inspections, deliveries, subcontractors, and material logistics.
  • Communicate with homeowners throughout construction and provide exceptional customer service.
  • Ensure projects remain on schedule and within budget.
  • Perform quality control inspections throughout every phase of construction.
  • Identify problems early and develop practical solutions before they impact production.
  • Utilize JobTread to maintain project documentation, schedules, and daily updates.
  • Complete final walkthroughs and manage punch lists.
  • Continuously improve company systems, efficiency, and production.

Hands-On Leadership

This is a leadership position, but we expect our leaders to lead from the front. While your primary responsibility is managing operations and supporting our crews, there will be times when you’ll need to jump in, assist with layouts, solve framing challenges, or help keep production moving.

We are looking for someone who earns the respect of the team through leadership, experience, and a willingness to help when needed.

Qualifications

  • Minimum 5 years of residential construction experience.
  • Experience managing crews or supervising projects.
  • Strong knowledge of framing, decks, roof structures, and general residential construction.
  • Ability to read construction plans and troubleshoot field conditions.
  • Excellent organizational and communication skills.
  • Strong leadership and problem-solving abilities.
  • Comfortable using technology including tablets, smartphones, and project management software.
  • Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record.

What We’re Looking For

We’re searching for someone who wants to grow with our company—not someone looking for just another job.

The ideal candidate:

  • Takes ownership without being asked.
  • Communicates professionally with customers and employees.
  • Leads by example.
  • Holds crews accountable while maintaining a positive work environment.
  • Thinks ahead and solves problems before they become costly mistakes.
  • Takes pride in delivering exceptional craftsmanship.

Compensation & Growth

  • Starting Salary: $80,000–$90,000 per year (based on experience)
  • Paid holidays
  • Paid vacation
  • Performance-based bonus opportunities
  • Long-term advancement opportunities within the company

Company Vehicle & Equipment

We believe in rewarding commitment and performance. During the initial onboarding and evaluation period, the successful candidate will use their personal vehicle for work-related travel.

Once you have demonstrated the ability to independently manage projects, lead crews, and uphold the standards of PCT Outdoor Living, you’ll become eligible for additional company-provided benefits, including:

  • Company truck
  • Company iPhone
  • Company iPad

Our goal is to invest in team members who prove they are committed to helping us grow.

If you’re an experienced construction professional looking for a long-term leadership opportunity where you can make a real impact, we’d love to hear from you.
