These skills and qualifications are crucial for delivering projects on time, within scope, and fostering effective teamwork.

What does a Project Manager do?

A Project Manager is responsible for planning, executing, and overseeing projects to ensure they are completed on time, within budget, and meet the required quality standards. They coordinate the efforts of team members, manage resources, and communicate with stakeholders throughout the project lifecycle. Job description

We’re partnered with one of Chicago’s most respected and financially secure general contractors as they look to add an Assistant Project Manager or Project Manager to their growing team.

With annual revenue exceeding $1B, the company has the resources, project portfolio and market presence of a major national contractor, while maintaining a strong local identity and long-term commitment to the Chicago market.

The firm delivers large-scale, complex projects across commercial, healthcare, education, multifamily, hospitality, interiors, life sciences and mission-critical construction. Their portfolio includes some of the most high-profile and technically demanding projects in the region.

This opportunity can be tailored around an ambitious Assistant Project Manager ready to take on greater responsibility or an established Project Manager looking to join a stronger platform with larger projects, better resources and clear long-term progression.

Responsibilities

  • Support or lead projects from preconstruction through closeout
  • Coordinate closely with owners, architects, consultants, subcontractors and internal teams
  • Manage project budgets, schedules, contracts, change orders and cost reporting
  • Review drawings and specifications and help resolve design and constructability issues
  • Manage RFIs, submittals, procurement logs and project documentation
  • Lead subcontractor coordination and progress meetings
  • Track project performance and identify potential risks before they affect delivery
  • Partner with Superintendents to maintain schedule, quality and safety standards
  • Support monthly forecasting, billing and financial reporting
  • Assist with procurement, subcontractor buyout and scope reviews
  • Build strong relationships with clients and project stakeholders
  • Mentor Project Engineers and junior members of the project team
  • Support project turnover, punch-list completion and final closeout

Requirements

  • Experience as an Assistant Project Manager, Project Manager or Project Engineer with a general contractor
  • Experience delivering commercial construction projects from preconstruction through completion
  • Strong understanding of project controls, contracts, scheduling and cost management
  • Ability to read and interpret drawings, specifications and contract documents
  • Strong communication, organization and problem-solving skills
  • Confidence working directly with clients, architects and subcontractors
  • Experience with Procore, Bluebeam, Microsoft Project or similar construction software
  • Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, Engineering, Architecture or a related field is preferred

Compensation and Benefits

  • Competitive base salary based on experience
  • Annual performance bonus
  • Vehicle allowance or company vehicle, depending on level
  • Comprehensive medical, dental and vision insurance
  • 401(k) with company contribution
  • Generous PTO and paid holidays
  • Strong project pipeline throughout Chicago
  • Access to major, high-profile projects
  • Best-in-class technology, systems and project support
  • Structured training and leadership development
  • Clear progression from APM to PM, Senior PM and Project Executive
  • Long-term stability with a financially secure $1B+ contractor

Why Join?

The company is known for taking on complex, high-profile work and surrounding its project teams with the support needed to deliver successfully. Employees benefit from strong leadership, excellent systems, experienced field teams and access to projects that can significantly accelerate their careers.

For an ambitious construction professional looking to step into larger projects, increase their responsibility and build a long-term career with one of Chicago’s most powerful general contractors, this is an outstanding opportunity.
