The Leonardo DRS Naval Power Systems business is a trusted provider of innovative naval gas and hybrid power systems, control technology and support solutions for the U.S. Navy and navies around the world.

Job Summary

DRS Naval Power Systems is seeking a highly technical Project Engineering Manager to lead a team of 8-12 Project Engineers within a matrixed engineering organization. This high-visibility role combines people leadership with hands-on technical and project leadership in support of advanced Naval Power Systems products, including power converters, motor drives, uninterruptible power supplies, energy storage, and power distribution systems. This leader will be responsible for the functional management and development of the Project Engineer team, including performance management, coaching, workforce planning, skill gap assessment, and hiring support, while also driving continuous improvement and engineering efficiency. In parallel, this role will lead complex, multidisciplinary engineering programs, helping teams solve difficult technical challenges, execute product development efforts, and communicate project status clearly to leadership, cross-functional partners, customers, and suppliers.

Job Responsibilities
  • Manage resource allocations for a team of 8-12 Project Engineers  
  • Interview and hire staff to support resource demands and skill needs  
  • Conduct annual reviews, provide feedback, training, and career guidance to develop future engineering leaders  
  • Ensure that the Engineering Labor Forecast, used by the business, accurately reflects Basis-of-Estimate commitments across all NPS product lines  
  • Initiate, develop, and lead engineering efficiency and other continuous improvement efforts  
  • Organize, lead, and motivate technical teams in the design and development of challenging products and systems including budgeting, project selection, execution oversight, and alignment with business objectives  
  • Develop project plans and pre-contract proposal estimates  
  • Confidently and competently represent DRS in front of customers, including the US Navy
  •  Collaborate with other departments, DRS locations, and suppliers to solve problems and develop cost- effective, high-quality solutions  
  • Lead project engineers in the management of programs using standard EVM tools, analysis, and reporting exhibits, Variance Analysis, Root Cause and Corrective Action, and Risk and Opportunity Proactive Management to ensure programs remain on schedule, on budget, and meeting technical requirements
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Systems, Software, Electrical, or Mechanical Engineering
  • 5+ years of experience managing technical teams, preferably Project Engineers.
  • Proven experience leading product development across the full lifecycle, from concept through qualification and fielding
  • Experience leading the design, development, integration, and delivery of complex systems or subsystems
  • Strong knowledge of program management methodologies, including Waterfall, Agile, and Earned Value Management (EVM)
  • Demonstrated ability to lead root cause analysis, corrective actions, and risk/opportunity management
  • Experience in conceptual designs, technical documentation, and budget estimates for bids and proposals 
  • Strong leadership, mentoring, interpersonal skills and team development skills, with a high degree of ownership and accountability
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced engineering environment
  • Experience with DoW programs and military standards preferred

 U.S. Citizenship required. This position requires an active DOD security clearance or the ability to obtain such clearance within a reasonable time after commencement of employment.
