Job description

Postion: Project Controls Lead

Location: Calgary, Alberta; occasional site visits to Kitimat, BC

Contract: June 2 or June 16, 2026 (start) until December 31st, 2026 (possible extension)


Introduction

Brunel is seeking an experienced Project Controls Lead – Brownfield Projects to support our leading oil and gas client’s LNG brownfield portfolio. This role is responsible for leading the delivery of core project controls functions, including estimating, scheduling, cost control, and risk management across multiple brownfield initiatives.


Working within an integrated team environment, the successful candidate will partner closely with project specialists, contractors, finance, and asset excellence teams to establish project baselines, develop accurate forecasts, and ensure effective cost and schedule control throughout project execution.


Responsibilities

  • Lead the review and validation of contractor-developed estimates to ensure accuracy, completeness, and alignment with project scope
  • Develop and maintain benchmarking data to effectively challenge contractor pricing and drive cost competitiveness
  • Prepare independent estimates as required to support project decision-making and cost validation
  • Establish and reinforce robust cost control practices, ensuring discipline in tracking, forecasting, and reporting
  • Support month-end close activities, including accurate assessment of Value of Work Done (VOWD) and Estimate at Completion (EAC)
  • Contribute to timely and high-quality portfolio-level progress reporting for brownfield projects
  • Develop and maintain integrated Level 1, 2, and 3 project schedules using MS Project and/or Primavera
  • Consolidate contractor and vendor schedules into a cohesive, fully integrated project plan
  • Critically assess and challenge contractor schedules to ensure realism, efficiency, and alignment with project objectives
  • Manage the preparation and processing of purchase requisitions in a timely and compliant manner
  • Provide support for SAP account management, ensuring accuracy and alignment with project financial controls
  • Coordinate the timely closure of purchase orders and FI networks in collaboration with contract and procurement stakeholders
  • Define clear, efficient, and cost-effective reporting requirements with contractors, improving transparency and consistency
  • Rigorously review and validate contractor reports to ensure accuracy, reliability, and actionable insight
  • Collaborate seamlessly with project specialists, contractors, finance, and asset excellence teams to drive integrated project delivery


Requirements

  • Proven experience in Project Controls, with a strong focus on cost estimating and cost control
  • Demonstrated ability to review and validate contractor-developed estimates and cost reports
  • Strong capability and interest in benchmarking and challenging contractor pricing
  • Practical experience supporting cost reporting, forecasting, and month-end processes (including VOWD and EAC)
  • Hands-on experience developing and managing project schedules using MS Project and/or Primavera
  • Familiarity with contractor reporting processes and the ability to bring clarity and consistency to reporting requirements
  • Working knowledge of SAP, including supporting project financials and procurement processes
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with high attention to detail
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate across project teams and contractors
  • Comfortable working in a dynamic, evolving project environment with changing priorities
  • TA3 (or equivalent certification in Estimating) is preferred
