What we need
At Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts, we have an exciting opportunity for an energetic, passionate, and accomplished Senior Manager of Software Engineering. This is a hands-on leadership role for a "player-coach" who will lead a team of talented engineers while remaining deeply involved in the technical work. Reporting to the Director, you will be responsible for the development and delivery of reliable and scalable digital technology solutions that provide a highly personalized and engaging customer experience.
This position is eligible for the Flex persona.
Your Day to Day
  • Lead, mentor, and inspire the engineering teams dedicated to the MyBlue member portal and mobile applications, fostering a culture of collaboration, innovation, and accountability.
  • Develop and execute a strategic technical vision and roadmap for the Digital platform, aligning with the company's digital member to experience objectives.
  • Drive the architectural design, development, and implementation of new features and enhancements for Digital, ensuring they are scalable, reliable, and secure.
  • Partner closely with product management, UX/UI design, and business stakeholders to define the Digital roadmap and deliver an exceptional and seamless user experience for our members.
  • Oversee the entire software development lifecycle for the Digital platforms, from concept and design to deployment and maintenance, utilizing agile methodologies.
  • Ensure the operational excellence of the Digital ecosystem, including managing incident response, improving monitoring capabilities, and guaranteeing platform performance and uptime.
  • Manage budgets, resources, and timelines for all Digital engineering projects to ensure they are delivered on time and within scope.
  • Stay at the forefront of emerging technologies and digital trends, championing their adoption to innovate and enhance the Digital platforms.
  • Establish and enforce engineering best practices, including code reviews, security standards, and QA automation, to improve the overall quality of the Digital applications.

We're Looking for:
  • Deep hands-on experience architecting, solutioning, developing, and delivering mobile and/or web-based applications (Angular, React Native, REST API with Apigee and SpringBoot)
  • Experience with Agile methodology, web/mobile testing tools, deployment, and configuration management tools (DevSecOps), and secure infrastructure management
  • Experience in a public and private secure cloud environment, preferably AWS. Familiarity with PaaS.
  • Experience in collaborating with technology vendors and research providers to solution new business capabilities
  • Excellent analysis skills and the ability to develop document processes and methodologies.
  • Extensive experience in forging relationships across technical & business resources and leveraging networks
  • Ability to align with leadership direction and provide recommendations to optimize technology to deliver business value quickly with quality
  • Ability to coach, mentor, and influence resources inside and outside of direct span of control
  • Experience with the following technologies:
    • Mobile Development: Android Native, iOS Native
    • Web Technologies: Content Management systems as Drupal, Content Delivery Networks like Akamai or F5
    • API and Security: Gateway security like F5
    • DevOps and Cloud: Confluent Kafka
    • Databases: Relational, Object-Oriented, NoSQL, InMemory
    • Performance and Monitoring: Performance testing tools (LoadRunner, JMeter, Gatling), Performance monitoring and Observability (Splunk Observability, New Relic), AWS Monitoring (CloudWatch, Performance Insights), Debug and analysis tools (Splunk, Log Rocket), and BrowserStack.

What You Bring:
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field.
  • 10+ years of experience in software engineering, with at least 5 years in a management or leadership role where you remained actively technical.
  • A proven track record of leading and managing high-performing engineering teams to deliver high-quality software.
  • A strong technical background with experience in a variety of technologies, including cloud platforms (AWS), programming languages (e.g., Java, JavaScript, Python), and modern web technologies.
  • Excellent communication, leadership, and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong business acumen and the ability to translate business needs into technical solutions.

Salary Range: $163,800.00 - $200,200.00
