Job description

This Opportunity

WSP is seeking a Mining Construction Safety Manager to monitor and oversee all onsite construction activities for a large EPCM mining project in our growing Earth & Environment team. This full-time onsite position can be based anywhere in the United States with preference in Nevada, Utah, Colorado, Alaska, or near major mining projects. Travel per diem is available for those not local to the projects.

The full-time Construction Safety Manager will be responsible for overseeing health, safety, security, and environmental (HSSE) performance across the project and site compliance with all local, regional, legislative and client regulations and standards. The Construction Safety Manager will verify and validate the contractors are delivering safe civil, structural, mechanical, electrical, and earthworks scopes for projects that may involve open pit and/or underground environments. This role involves collaborating with internal WSP construction, engineering, and procurement team members and with the client, contractors, and other stakeholders to foster a strong health and safety culture that is focused on delivering successful outcomes.

Your Impact
  • Lead the development and implementation of safety programs, health and hygiene initiatives, and environmental control, monitoring, and reporting systems that comply with all local, regional, legislative and client regulations and standards across the project site.
  • Review and oversee contractors’ environmental, health, and safety plans and procedures, supporting contractor pre-qualification and selection processes, and ensuring compliance with applicable safety standards, rules, and regulations throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Ensure the preparation and maintenance of project emergency response and preparedness plans, as well as comprehensive health programs that consider public impacts and assessments.
  • Conduct regular risk assessments and safety audits to identify potential hazards in the workplace and implement corrective actions to mitigate risks.
  • Lead the delivery of training programs for company employees on health and safety protocols, emergency response procedures, project specific requirements and proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Investigate workplace incidents and near misses, as per company workplace incident policy and procedure. Document findings and recommend corrective actions to prevent recurrence and improve safety measures.
  • Collect and analyze health and safety data, preparing reports for management that highlight performance metrics, trends, and areas for improvement.
  • Mentor junior staff and contribute to the growth of WSP's mining EPCM practice.
  • Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds, resources, and conduct, and adhere to WSP's Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures.
Who You Are Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in engineering or construction management is preferred or trade school or equivalent work experience.
  • 10+ years of relevant hands-on safety management experience in active mining settings, with a strong preference for candidates who have worked across both open pit and underground mine development projects.
  • Experience in large-scale heavy civil construction, process facilities, and/or mining infrastructure, such as haul roads, underground access (declines, shafts, drifts), waste rock facilities, tailings systems, and associated support facilities and related environmental controls.
  • Commitment to safety. MSHA certification is required, while other certifications (CMSP, CSP, CSMC, CIH, etc.) and OSHA 30-hour are preferred. MSHA Authorized Trainer is preferred.
  • Knowledge of construction and mine safety regulations, planning, and risks.
  • Strong verbal/written communication, problem solving, conflict resolution and decision-making skills with good working computer capabilities in MS Office products.
  • Ability to liaise between designers, owners, contractors, and end-users.
  • Able to walk distances on uneven sites, climb small ladders, and work in an active construction environment both above and underground.
  • Must pass drug test, background check and must have a satisfactory driving record in accordance with the Company's driving (MVR) policy.
