Job description

Position Title: Head Coach for Blazing Barracudas Swim Club amp; Head Varsity Swim Coach for Hathaway Brown School

Position Type: 12-month position; Stipend Exempt
Reports to: Director of Operations for Blazing Barracudas Swim Club

Position Summary

The Head Coach is responsible for leading all aspects of the Blazing Barracudas Swim Club, a year-round, co-ed USA Swimming program owned and operated by Hathaway Brown School, as well as serving as the Head Varsity Swim Coach for Hathaway Brown School. The program serves swimmers of varying ages and skill levels across multiple sites, including Hathaway Brown, Twinsburg Fitness Center, Mayfield High School, and Cleveland State University.

This role provides leadership in a high-energy, competitive, and developmentally focused environment. The Head Coach is responsible for fostering a culture of excellence, consistency, and inclusion, while supporting the growth of student-athletes both in and out of the water.

The Head Coach oversees the club’s athletic vision, coaching philosophy, and competitive programming across all training groups and sites while also leading the Hathaway Brown varsity swim program. The role focuses on athlete development, coaching leadership, staff mentorship, and creating a positive and aligned team culture within both the club and school environments.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Lead and uphold the mission, philosophy, and vision of the Blazing Barracudas Swim Club and Hathaway Brown School Athletics
  • Serve as Head Varsity Swim Coach for Hathaway Brown School, including planning and leading practices, meet preparation, athlete development, and team culture
  • Design and implement a cohesive training philosophy that supports athlete development from beginner through advanced levels
  • Establish and maintain high expectations for athlete conduct, accountability, and sportsmanship
  • Supervise, mentor, and support assistant and site-based coaching staff
  • Foster a positive, disciplined, and developmentally appropriate team culture across all levels of the program
  • Support athlete recruitment, retention, and long-term development
  • Build strong relationships with swimmers, families, coaches, and school leadership
  • Ensure compliance with USA Swimming, Safe Sport, MAAPP, OHSAA, and all governing body standards
  • Serve as a visible and positive representative of the club and Hathaway Brown School within the swimming community
  • Collaborate with athletics, aquatics, and school leadership to support program alignment and long-term growth
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree required

  • Demonstrated experience coaching competitive swimming across multiple age groups and ability levels

  • Strong knowledge of training methodologies, athlete development, and competitive swim structures

  • Experience managing or leading a team of coaches preferred

  • Prior experience as a competitive swimmer at the club or collegiate level preferred

  • Ability to build a positive, disciplined, and developmentally appropriate team culture

  • Excellent communication and relationship-building skills

  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail

  • Commitment to working within a mission-driven, independent school environment

Certifications amp; Requirements
  • Current USA Swimming coaching certifications (or ability to obtain)

  • CPR/AED and First Aid certification

  • Completion of all required USA Swimming safety, Safe Sport, and compliance training

  • Background check and adherence to all governing body regulations

Schedule Expectations

This is a year-round position with a non-traditional schedule aligned to the club’s seasonal rhythms. Typical short-course season hours include weekday afternoons and evenings, Saturday mornings, and meet coverage as required. Additional administrative responsibilities are completed during designated office hours. Long-course season scheduling varies based on site availability and program needs.

The varsity swim season requires additional evening and weekend commitments during the OHSAA season, including practices, competitions, team meetings, and championship events.
