Job description

Our Major Projects group is currently looking to add a Project Accountant to our growing team, based in Edmonton, AB.

Reporting to the Project Controller, this role is a key contributor to the financial success of major construction projects, providing full life-cycle accounting functions and operational cost control for assigned projects. Working in close partnership with Project Managers and field operations, this position is responsible for the accurate tracking, analysis, and reporting of project costs from job setup through to closeout, and plays a critical role in maintaining budget integrity, supporting client billing, and ensuring compliance with Valard's financial controls and reporting standards.

Duties and Responsibilities

Project Setup & Budget Management

  • Set up new projects in JD Edwards (Job Master, Cost Codes, budgets) and maintain job master data integrity with Quanta's consolidation tool
  • Participate in Day One Budget creation from tender documentation and support the budget change management process, including tracking revisions

Cost Control & Financial Reporting

  • Review and correct cost coding on purchase orders and other transactions, and support field staff with third-party cost coding
  • Manage monthly cost accruals, journal entries, and mid-month report packages with project management teams
  • For Percentage of Completion projects, facilitate monthly forecast meetings, provide variance analysis summaries, and load approved revenue/estimate data into JD Edwards
  • Prepare margin analysis and WIP calculations (costs/billings in excess), and support project profitability analysis and forecasting
  • Track pending, approved, and disputed change orders, quantifying revenue/margin impact per policy

Client Billing & Accounts Receivable

  • Prepare and administer client billings with required backup documentation, and monitor accounts receivable for collections
  • Reconcile total contract value to billings and forecast, and manage CIEB positions within established thresholds
  • Track and reconcile holdback receivable and administer release collection; ensure proper GST/PST treatment on billings

Subcontracts, Audits & Closeout

  • Administer subcontractor contracts and facilitate mid-month PO review meetings; compile documentation for internal/external audits
  • Support the Project Controller in closing and reviewing project costs on a weekly, monthly, and quarterly basis
  • Manage job closeout, including reconciliation, final cost reporting, and holdback payable tracking/release
  • Ensure revenue is recognized per ASC 606 with supporting documentation, and proper GST/PST treatment on invoices

Month End & General

  • Facilitate month end cost accrual meetings and ensure deadlines/reporting requirements are met
  • Verify labour, equipment, and material charges, and reconcile intercompany/shared-service allocations
  • Collaborate on Estimate-to-Complete calculations; complete ad hoc analyses and other duties as assigned

Requirements

  • Post-Secondary education in Finance, Accounting, Business Administration, or a related field
  • 3+ years of progressive experience in a project accounting or cost control role
    • an equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered
  • Solid understanding of construction revenue recognition principles, cost and revenue accruals, and percentage of completion accounting
  • Working towards or holding an accounting designation (CPA or equivalent)

Preferred Skills / Qualifications

  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel, including pivot tables, lookups, and financial modelling
  • Experience with job costing management, project analytics, and Work-in-Progress (WIP) reporting
  • Familiarity with Quanta Services consolidation tools and financial reporting processes
  • Prior experience in the transmission, distribution, or renewable energy construction sector
  • Cost control or project controls background
  • Prior experience in the construction, electrical, or utility industry
  • JD Edwards or SAP experience
