Southwest General Health Center is a 352-bed community hospital located in Middleburg Heights, Ohio. One of the last standing community hospitals in Northeast Ohio, we partner with University Hospitals and other local community organizations to provide a full range of services to all who need us. Position summary:
The Director of Plant Operations provides strategic and operational leadership for all facility management functions, ensuring a safe, compliant, reliable, and efficient healthcare environment. This position is responsible for the planning, operation, maintenance, repair, and regulatory compliance of all hospital buildings, utility systems, grounds, and infrastructure.
The Director oversees multiple disciplines, including facilities maintenance, HVAC, electrical, plumbing, grounds, and administrative support staff. Responsibilities include development and administration of departmental operating and capital budgets, management of major construction and renovation projects, oversight of contractor and vendor relationships, and implementation of facility management best practices.
The Director ensures compliance with all applicable federal, state, and local regulations, including Joint Commission, CMS, OSHA, NFPA, EPA, DNV, and other healthcare facility requirements. The position serves as a key leader in emergency preparedness, utility management, life safety compliance, environment of care programs, and long-range facility planning.
Through effective leadership, workforce development, and resource management, the Director promotes operational excellence, supports organizational goals, and ensures a safe and healing environment for patients, visitors, physicians, and staff.
Education: Bachelor's Degree in an engineering field preferred, or at least 10 years' experience in a large hospital's Facilities Department with progressive management responsibilities.
Required length and type of experience:
  • Minimum of 7-10 years of progressive healthcare facilities management experience.
  • Minimum of 5 years of leadership experience managing facility operations, maintenance, engineering, or construction functions.
  • Experience managing operating and capital budgets.
  • Experience leading construction, renovation, and infrastructure projects.

Required licensure, certification or registry:
  • Certified Healthcare Facility Manager (CHFM) Required (or acquired within six months)
  • Facility Management Professional (FMP) preferred
  • Professional Engineer (PE) preferred
