Position Summary
The Director of Operations is a senior leadership role responsible for overseeing the end-to-end operational performance of the organization. This position ensures the safe, compliant, efficient, and profitable movement of vehicles while aligning operational execution with corporate strategy, financial goals, and customer expectations.
The ideal candidate is a strategic and hands-on operational leader with deep experience in transportation, fleet operations, logistics, and multi-site management. This individual will lead cross-functional teams, drive operational excellence, and implement scalable processes that improve safety, service quality, profitability, and overall business performance.
Key Responsibilities
Operational Leadership

  • Provide strategic and tactical leadership across all operational functions to ensure alignment with organizational objectives and customer requirements.
  • Lead and support Regional Operations Managers to ensure consistent service delivery, operational efficiency, and cost control.
  • Develop and execute operational strategies that improve productivity, utilization, profitability, and customer satisfaction.
  • Establish governance frameworks, operational standards, and performance oversight mechanisms across the organization.
Team Leadership & Development
  • Mentor, coach, and develop operational leaders and managers.
  • Foster a culture of accountability, collaboration, continuous improvement, and operational discipline.
  • Conduct regular performance evaluations and ensure teams are aligned with company goals and KPIs.
Safety & Compliance
  • Oversee safety programs and ensure full compliance with DOT, FMCSA, OSHA, and state transportation regulations.
  • Partner with Safety leadership to minimize incidents, claims, and operational risk.
  • Maintain compliance standards across fleet operations, driver management, and transportation activities.
Fleet & Maintenance Oversight
  • Oversee fleet maintenance strategy to maximize equipment reliability, uptime, and lifecycle cost efficiency.
  • Ensure preventative maintenance programs, vendor relationships, and parts availability support operational performance.
  • Monitor fleet utilization, equipment performance, and operational readiness.
Performance Management
  • Establish and monitor KPIs related to safety, service delivery, cost management, claims, utilization, and profitability.
  • Analyze operational data and identify opportunities for process improvement and cost reduction.
  • Maintain accountability for on-time delivery, customer satisfaction, and operational efficiency.
Network Planning & Business Growth
  • Partner with Network Planning teams to optimize routes, lane design, and capacity utilization.
  • Support business development initiatives focused on revenue growth, customer retention, and strategic partnerships.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally to align operational capabilities with sales and growth objectives.
Financial Management
  • Manage operational budgets, forecasting, and cost controls.
  • Drive P&L performance through operational efficiencies and disciplined resource management.
  • Identify opportunities to improve margins and reduce operational expenses.
Qualifications
Education
  • Bachelor's degree in Business, Operations Management, Supply Chain, Logistics, or a related field required.
  • Master's degree preferred.
Experience
  • 10+ years of progressive leadership experience within transportation, fleet operations, logistics, or vehicle transportation industries.
  • Proven experience managing multi-site or regional operations.
  • Demonstrated success leading cross-functional teams and senior-level managers.
  • Strong background in P&L management, operational performance, and cost control.
  • Experience with fleet-based operations and vehicle logistics preferred.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Strong understanding of DOT/FMCSA regulations, transportation compliance, and fleet operations.
  • Exceptional leadership, communication, and organizational skills.
  • Proven ability to drive operational improvements and scalable processes.
