Job Summary
The Senior Director of Business Development is a strategic commercial leader responsible for driving sustainable revenue growth and expanding partnerships across a clinical research site network. This role leads business development initiatives with pharmaceutical, biotechnology, contract research organizations (CROs), and other industry sponsors to secure new clinical trial opportunities while strengthening long-term strategic relationships.
Working cross-functionally with operations, therapeutic area leadership, feasibility, and executive management, the Senior Director develops and executes growth strategies that maximize site utilization, enhance sponsor satisfaction, and position the organization as a preferred clinical research partner.
Key Responsibilities
  • Develop and execute comprehensive business development strategies aligned with organizational growth objectives.
  • Identify, cultivate, and secure new business opportunities with pharmaceutical companies, biotechnology firms, CROs, and academic research organizations.
  • Build and maintain executive-level relationships with sponsors and key industry stakeholders.
  • Lead contract and opportunity negotiations in collaboration with executive leadership and legal teams.
  • Create annual business development plans with measurable revenue and growth targets.
  • Serve as the primary commercial contact for strategic sponsor and CRO partnerships.
  • Develop long-term account strategies to increase repeat business and preferred provider status.
  • Conduct regular business reviews with sponsors to identify expansion opportunities and improve customer satisfaction.
  • Represent the organization during sponsor visits, qualification meetings, and executive presentations.
  • Partner closely with feasibility, clinical operations, and site leadership to evaluate and pursue new protocol opportunities.
  • Collaborate with therapeutic area experts to identify studies aligned with site capabilities and patient populations.
  • Monitor proposal activity, conversion rates, and pipeline performance.
  • Ensure timely responses to feasibility questionnaires and business development requests.
  • Monitor industry trends, sponsor pipelines, therapeutic area growth, and competitive market activity.
  • Identify emerging therapeutic areas and strategic opportunities for network expansion.
  • Provide executive leadership with market insights and business development forecasts.
  • Recommend investments that strengthen competitive positioning and sponsor value.
  • Collaborate with clinical operations, recruitment, finance, contracting, and regulatory teams to ensure successful study startup and execution.
  • Support strategic planning initiatives, acquisitions, and expansion opportunities.
  • Participate in executive leadership meetings and organizational planning.
  • Mentor and develop business development team members while promoting a culture of collaboration and accountability.
  • Establish and monitor key performance indicators (KPIs).
  • Prepare executive reports and business development dashboards.
  • Maintain accurate forecasting within the organization's CRM system.

  • Located in CST/EST of USA
  • Hunter role not an account management role
