Job description

The physicist will work under the supervision of Chief Medical Physicist and provide assistance in all aspects of practices in radiation oncology physics and radiation safety control which include technical direction of dosimetrists, radiation therapists, therapy equipment service engineers, and miscellaneous support staff and assure the accurate and safe uses of radiation generated by machines and radioactive materials in cancer treatments and in diagnostic procedures.


Required Skills
  • The qualified medical physicist is competent to practice independently in therapeutic radiologic physics as recognized by the American Board of radiology (ABR) or by the American Board of Medical Physics (ABMP).
  • Qualified to provide the design, optimization, technical evaluation, precise and accurate delivery of treatment plans.
  • Qualified to perform calibration and quality performance measures of all treatment equipment, patient monitoring systems and physics quality assurance devices.
  • Proficient technical skill in the operation of radiation oncology equipment and the computer network configuration.

Required Experience
  • Certification by the American Board of Radiology or by the American Board of Medical Physics in Therapeutic Radiologic Physics and maintain board certification during employment.
  • Must meet and maintain all qualifications imposed by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission and/or CA State and local radiation control agencies to practice radiation oncology physics and to provide oversight of the establishment and conduct of the radiation physics quality assurance program.
  • Maintain continuing education credits (MPCEC) in accordance with Commission on Accreditation of Medical Physics Education Programs (CAMPEP).
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in the calibration of therapy equipment, treatment planning and clinical physics responsibilities.
  • Intensive experience on intensity modulated radiotherapy/imaged guided radiotherapy/stereotactic radiosurgery/stereotactic body radiotherapy/volumetric modulated radiotherapy and high-dose-rate (HDR) brachytherapy.
  • Participation in American College of Radiology Radiation Oncology Practice Accreditation (ACR ROPA) survey or experience in preparation for ACR ROPA program or equivalent accreditation programs.
  • For board eligible physicist, i.e., completed CAMPEP-approved residency program, the medical physicist is required to obtain ABR Certification within 3 years of hiring in order to continue the employment.
  • The physicist is required to obtain Authorization As A Therapeutic Calibration Physicist In The State of California, within 3 years of hiring, in order to perform radiotherapy equipment calibration and radiation safety survey, and maintains the authorization during employment.

Preferred:

  • Doctoral degree in medical radiation physics, or Master degree from CAMPEP accredited medical physics program, and finished CAMPEP accredited residency programs.
