How much do brachytherapy jobs pay per year?

As of Jun 9, 2026, the average yearly pay for brachytherapy in the United States is $63,182.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $44,000.00 and $79,500.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Brachytherapy Specialist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Brachytherapy Specialist, you need a solid background in radiation therapy, anatomy, and oncology, typically supported by a degree in radiation therapy and relevant certification (such as ARRT). Familiarity with treatment planning systems, brachytherapy applicators, and dosimetry software is essential for safe and effective patient care. Attention to detail, strong communication, and problem-solving abilities are crucial soft skills for working with multidisciplinary teams and ensuring patient safety. These skills and qualifications are vital to deliver precise, safe, and effective brachytherapy treatments for cancer patients.

What are some typical daily responsibilities for a brachytherapy specialist in a clinical setting?

A brachytherapy specialist typically spends their day preparing and administering internal radiation treatments, calibrating and maintaining equipment, and collaborating closely with radiation oncologists, medical physicists, and nursing staff. They ensure all safety protocols are followed, assist in patient education and counseling, and document treatment plans and outcomes. The role also involves continual coordination with the multidisciplinary oncology team to tailor individualized treatment plans and to monitor patient progress throughout therapy.

What is the difference between Brachytherapy vs Radiation Therapist?

AspectBrachytherapyRadiation Therapist
CredentialsMedical degree, specialized training in brachytherapy proceduresRadiation therapy certification, often an associate or bachelor's degree in radiation therapy
Work EnvironmentHospitals, cancer treatment centers, specialized clinicsHospitals, outpatient clinics, cancer centers
Job RolePlacing radioactive sources internally or close to tumorsAdministering external beam radiation treatments

While both roles are involved in cancer treatment, Brachytherapy specialists focus on internal radiation procedures, requiring specialized medical training. Radiation Therapists operate external radiation equipment, providing essential patient care and treatment delivery. Both roles are vital in oncology but differ in procedures, credentials, and work settings.

Can you make 6 figures as a radiation therapist?

Radiation therapists typically earn salaries below six figures, with median annual wages around $85,000. Achieving a six-figure income may require additional experience, specialization, or working in high-paying regions, but it is uncommon for entry-level roles to reach that level without advanced credentials or supervisory responsibilities.

What is brachytherapy?

Brachytherapy is a type of internal radiation therapy used to treat cancer. During the procedure, radioactive material is placed directly inside or next to the tumor, allowing a high dose of radiation to target cancer cells while minimizing exposure to surrounding healthy tissues. It is commonly used to treat cancers such as prostate, cervical, and breast cancer. Brachytherapy can be delivered as a temporary or permanent treatment, depending on the type and location of the cancer. The procedure is typically performed by a specialized team including radiation oncologists and medical physicists.
