Job Description

The Manager, Mechanical Engineering Department is responsible for the customized and innovative designs of mechanical plans of Mission Critical Group products so that projects meet client needs. The overall objective of the Manager, Mechanical Engineering position is to lead and implement the strategic direction for all design components with a focus on achieving leading cycle time, delivering superior quality, and reducing per‐unit costs. Consistent and accurate representation of the Mission Critical Group brand, mission, vision, values, and organizational strategy are essential to achieving the goals of the organization. 

Accountabilities 

  • Increase project efficiency by effectively assisting Mechanical Engineers, Designers, and/or Drafters in developing and adhering to design techniques and processes. 
  • Provide technical guidance as the lead subject matter expert for all Mechanical Engineering consultative services regarding areas of material selection and design concepts which maintain the integrity of all customized products, comply with applicable industry standards, and meet client specifications.  
  • Support best‐in‐class manufacturing with a focus on cycle time, quality, and value by efficiently maintaining internal department processes, providing professional expertise to assist in the growth and development of team members, and distributing departmental capabilities to maximize human capital resources.  
  • Strengthen Mission Critical Group’s reputation and sustainability through decreased operational costs and increased quality by establishing, managing, monitoring and improving the Mechanical Engineering processes to reduce costs and provide new and innovative products. Increase efficiency and quality by proactively identifying and implementing advanced tools within the engineering and manufacturing departments.    
  • Effectively manage Mechanical Engineering manpower, resources and tools to ensure client’s technical and scheduling needs are met.    
  • Coordinate with the Estimating Department on a technical basis to ensure accurate quote execution; collaborate with Manufacturing Managers to monitor progress and efficiency on all projects and act as the final authority for technical‐related matters. 
  • Recommend budget expenditures and appropriations for research and development with a focus on product simplification and standardization by using cost reduction and process improvement philosophies.   
  • Coordinate efforts with Electrical Engineering and Building Design Departments to ensure all departments share technical details to develop a finalized design and work together to supply detailed and compliant designs to the client and to Manufacturing. 
Qualifications

Required Knowledge / Experience 

  • 10+ years of Mechanical Engineering design experience in the Marine, Heavy Industrial, and/ or Oil & Gas industries. 
  • 5+ years of electro‐mechanical power system design experience with low voltage, medium voltage, power distribution and controls, and motor control centers 
  • 2 years leading and managing an engineering team 
  • Intrapersonal Skills: Self‐motivated and able to identify, examine, and resolve issues independently from others. Holds a strong regard for guidelines, procedures and integrity.   
  • Engineering and Technology: Knowledge of the practical application of engineering science and technology. This includes applying principles, techniques, procedures, and equipment to the design and production of various goods and services.  
  • Production and Processing: Knowledge of raw materials, production processes, quality control, costs, and other techniques for maximizing the effective manufacture and distribution of goods.  
  • Design: Knowledge of design techniques, tools, and principals involved in production of precision technical plans, blueprints, drawings, and models. Knowledge of specific “Custom Buss” design guidelines. 
  • Computers and Electronics: Knowledge of computer hardware and software, including 3D Mechanical Design applications such as Pro E Wildfire, SolidWorks, Autodesk Inventor. Proficient with Microsoft Office Business Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Visio) as well as MRP/ERP systems such as SAP, Oracle.  
  • Codes & Standards: Knowledgeable of UL Standards (UL‐1558, UL‐891, UL‐67, UL‐508, UL‐845 and UL‐DLAH). Familiar with regional utility codes in Chicago, New York, California, etc. 
  • Verbal & Written Communication Skills: This position requires high skills (Ability to read, analyze, and interpret common scientific and technical journals, financial reports, and legal documents. Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community. Ability to write speeches and articles for publication that conform to prescribed style and format. Ability to effectively present information to top management, public groups, and/or boards of directors. 
  • Math Skills: This position requires high skills (probability, statistical, quadratic equation). 

Preferred 

  • Master’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field, or a Master of Business Administration degree. 
  • Professional Engineer (PE) or Engineer in Training (EIT). 

Education 

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering.
