6-12 Literacy Interventionist
Position Purpose
Under the general supervision of the School Principal, to identify, support, and accelerate the literacy growth of students who are significantly below grade level. The Interventionist serves as both a direct instructor for high-need students and a strategic partner to content-area teachers, ensuring that literacy skills such as academic vocabulary, critical comprehension, and disciplinary writing are accessible to every learner across the secondary curriculum.
Essential Functions
  • Administering universal screeners and diagnostic tools (such as phonics surveys or fluency checks) to identify specific literacy deficits.
  • Analyzing school-wide data sets to identify "at-risk" students and determine the appropriate level of intervention (Tier 2 or Tier 3).
  • Tracking student growth weekly or bi-weekly using formative assessments to ensure the intervention is producing the desired results.
  • Maintaining detailed records of student achievement and growth to share with administrators, parents, and Individualized Education Program (IEP) teams.
  • Designing and leading intensive, small-group sessions focused on the "Big Five" of literacy: phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension.
  • Adapting high-interest, low-readability materials to ensure adolescent students remain engaged without feeling "babied" by the content.
  • Teaching specific strategies for decoding multisyllabic words and navigating complex academic texts found in secondary textbooks.
  • Implementing evidence-based writing interventions, focusing on sentence structure, paragraph organization, and argumentative claims.
  • Partnering with content-area teachers (Science, History, Math) to model literacy strategies that help students access grade-level curriculum.
  • Contributing to Professional Learning Communities by sharing literacy trends, data, and instructional "best practices."
  • Facilitating workshops for staff on topics such as "Reading Across the Content Areas" or "Supporting English Language Learners (ELLs).
  • Managing specialized literacy software, leveled libraries, and intervention curricula.
  • Serving as a key member of the Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) or Response to Intervention (RTI) team to coordinate student placement and exit criteria.

Additional Duties
Performs other related tasks as assigned by the Principal and other central office administrators as designated by the Superintendent.
Note: The above description is illustrative of tasks and responsibilities. It is not meant to be all inclusive of every task or responsibility.
Equipment
Use standard office equipment such as personal computers, printer, copy and fax machines, and telephone.
Travel Requirements
Travels to school district buildings and professional meetings as required.
Work Schedule
Standard teacher work schedule as set forth in the Teachers' Unit Contract.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Deep understanding of the cognitive processes involved in reading
  • Knowledge of the unique challenges facing 6-12 learners
  • Familiarity with specific secondary programs
  • Mastery of the Multi-Tiered System of Supports, including how to move students between Tier 1, 2, and 3 based on data.
  • The ability to translate raw scores from assessments (like NWEA MAP, i-Ready, or STAR) into actionable instructional plans.
  • Skill in "chunking" complex high school-level text into digestible parts without stripping away the intellectual rigor.
  • The ability to observe a student reading in real-time and immediately identify whether the error is a phonological, morphological, or fluency-based issue.
  • Proficiency in using adaptive literacy software and assistive technologies (e.g., text-to-speech, digital graphic organizers) to support struggling readers.
  • The skill to provide constructive feedback to veteran content-area teachers on how to embed literacy into their subject matter.
  • The ability to connect with students who may have experienced years of academic failure
  • Being able to look at a complex educational problem and determine if the root cause is a skill deficit, a lack of background knowledge, or a motivational issue.
  • The capacity to pivot a lesson mid-stream if the data or student engagement suggests the current approach isn't working.
  • Maintaining a growth mindset for students who may progress in small, incremental steps rather than large leaps.

Physical and Mental Demands, Work Hazards
Work in standard office and school building environments.
