Overview

Summary Description: The General Manager is a business partner accountable for leading a single Restaurant Management and Associate team to deliver Steak ‘n Shake operational and financial standards on all shifts. The General Manager has overall responsibility for assessing Management and Associate performance to identify opportunities for development and coach for improvement. This position has primary accountability for the delivery and implementation of all Steak ‘n Shake procedures, policies and specifications which deliver the Steak ‘n Shake Vision and Mission. The General Manager will partner directly with Division President and will receive market level support from Human Resources Manager and Field Training Manager/Coordinator to meet business objectives.

Team and Reporting
  • Team Function/Scope: This position serves as the primary leader of a single Steak ‘n Shake Restaurant
  • Department: Operations - Restaurant
  • Reports to: Division President
  • FLSA: Exempt
  • Direct reports: Restaurant Manager, Manager, Shift Manager, Trainers and all Restaurant Associates
Responsibilities
  • Create an environment of sales growth through guest focus and delivery of Steak ‘n Shake procedures and policies
  • Identify, train and develop Trainers, Shift Managers, Managers and Restaurant Managers; develop and motivate the Management team to deliver objectives such as guest delight, cost control, quality, and pricing
  • Train, coach and inspire associates to deliver exceptional service, food and environment
  • Lead restaurant team to deliver on key metrics and financial expectations
  • Manage all restaurant costs to deliver positive cash flow
  • Maintain compliance with food, health, safety and security standards and procedures; create a safe environment free of harassment
  • Deliver Gold Standard service and lead by example
  • Demonstrate effective decision making and problem solving aligned with Steak ‘n Shake Principles
  • Lead Labor Management system through labor forecasting, scheduling, and shift labor management
  • Has final authority over discipline, termination, and hiring decisions
Customer and Brand Focus
  • Address guest concerns using the Steak ‘n Shake Guest Recovery Model
  • Ensure guests are recognized upon entry and departure
  • Train and motivate managers and associates to deliver hospitality
  • Communicate with Managers and Associates through scheduled meetings, boards, training, and coaching
  • Foster a positive team environment with service-oriented staff
  • Operate in accordance with Gold Standard expectations and other food safety practices
Financial Growth
  • Manage profitable shifts focused on guest satisfaction, quality, and efficiency
  • Approve schedules within Labor Scheduling System parameters
  • Ensure appropriate staffing levels and inventory controls
  • Oversee cash handling and banking procedures
  • Ensure completion of shift tools and administrative duties
  • Ensure compliance with state and federal regulatory laws
Requirements
  • High School graduate or equivalent preferred
  • Certified in all Service and Production Stations at Steak ‘n Shake or equivalent
  • ServSafe certified
  • Understand Steak ‘n Shake policies, state laws, health codes, and sanitation procedures
  • Positive, motivating communication; strong organization and time management
  • Coaching and mentoring skills; flexible and adaptable
  • Ability to read, write, perform math calculations and analyze data
  • Demonstrate Golden Rule and Relentless pursuit of Excellence
  • Ability to work in excess of 50 hours per week while standing, walking
  • Ability to lift, carry, push and pull 30 lbs
