Job description

LEGO & Creative Building Instructor (Part-Time)

U1 Sports | Riverdale, NY

About U1 Sports

U1 Sports is a youth sports organization dedicated to helping young people thrive through athletics, academics, leadership, and enrichment. Through partnerships with schools and communities, we create engaging after-school experiences that help students build Confidence, Character, and Community.

Position Summary

U1 Sports is seeking a creative and energetic LEGO & Creative Building Instructor to lead structured building and design activities for elementary and middle school students participating in our U1 Enrich to 6 After-School Program.

The instructor will use LEGO bricks and other age-appropriate building materials to create fun challenges that encourage creativity, teamwork, engineering thinking, and problem-solving.

This is an enrichment position- the goal is to make building, designing, and creating fun and accessible rather than delivering an advanced engineering curriculum.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead structured LEGO building and creative design activities.
  • Facilitate individual and team-based building challenges.
  • Introduce basic concepts related to design, engineering, structures, and problem-solving.
  • Encourage students to plan, build, test, and improve their creations.
  • Create age-appropriate challenges for different grade levels.
  • Promote creativity, collaboration, communication, and perseverance.
  • Provide students with opportunities to explain and showcase their creations.
  • Maintain a positive, inclusive, and well-managed learning environment.
  • Organize LEGO pieces, building materials, and instructional supplies.
  • Collaborate with Program Leaders and other enrichment instructors.
  • Ensure materials are properly collected and stored following each session.

Sample Activities

Activities may include:

  • Tower and bridge challenges
  • Build-a-city projects
  • Vehicle design
  • LEGO mazes
  • Creative architecture
  • Team building competitions
  • Design-your-own invention challenges
  • Structures and engineering challenges
  • Storytelling through LEGO creations
  • Free-build challenges with specific themes

Qualifications Required:

  • Experience working with elementary or middle school students.
  • Creative and comfortable facilitating hands-on activities.
  • Strong communication and group management skills.
  • Organized and comfortable managing building materials and supplies.
  • Ability to provide clear instructions while allowing students room to create independently.
  • Enthusiastic, dependable, patient, and professional.

Preferred:

  • Experience with LEGO-based enrichment, STEM programming, makerspaces, engineering activities, camps, or after-school programs.
  • Current college student or degree in Education, Engineering, STEM, Art, Architecture, Technology, or a related field.
  • Experience designing hands-on activities for children.
  • Bilingual English/Spanish is a plus.

Schedule:

Part-Time | Specialty Instructor

Approximately 1–2 afternoons per week during the school year.

Typical instructional block: 4:00 PM–5:00 PM.

Schedule may vary based on program enrollment and enrichment rotation.

Compensation

Competitive hourly rate based on experience and qualifications.

What We’re Looking For

We’re looking for someone who enjoys building alongside children and can turn a box of LEGO bricks into an engaging learning experience. The ideal instructor is creative, energetic, organized, and skilled at encouraging students to experiment, collaborate, and bring their ideas to life.

Why Join U1 Sports?

This role gives you the opportunity to help students develop creativity and problem-solving skills through one of the most accessible forms of hands-on learning: building and creating.

To Apply

Please submit your resume and a brief introduction highlighting your experience working with children and leading LEGO, STEM, engineering, makerspace, or other creative building activities.

U1 Sports is an Equal Opportunity Employer and welcomes applicants from all backgrounds.
