Job description

Job Title:  Lighting Services Engineer

Location: Tuscaloosa, AL 35401

Duration: 36 months

 

Position Summary

A Lighting Services Engineer is responsible for designing, implementing, and maintaining lighting systems for commercial buildings, residential spaces, industrial facilities, and outdoor environments. The role involves collaborating with clients, architects, contractors, and project teams to develop effective, aesthetically pleasing, and energy-efficient lighting solutions while ensuring compliance with applicable standards and regulations.

Key Responsibilities

Design Lighting Systems

  • Collaborate with clients, architects, and project stakeholders to understand project requirements and objectives.
  • Design lighting systems that meet aesthetic, functional, and energy-efficiency goals.

Lighting Calculations

  • Perform lighting calculations and simulations to determine appropriate fixtures, luminance levels, and lighting layouts for various spaces.

Energy Efficiency

  • Develop energy-efficient lighting designs utilizing LED technologies, daylight harvesting, and other sustainable practices.
  • Recommend solutions that reduce energy consumption and environmental impact.

Technical Drawings

  • Create detailed lighting plans, technical drawings, layouts, and specifications for construction and implementation.

Product Selection

  • Select suitable lighting fixtures, controls, sensors, and accessories based on project requirements, budget constraints, and client preferences.

Compliance

  • Ensure all lighting designs comply with relevant codes, standards, and regulations, including energy codes, safety requirements, and accessibility guidelines.

Site Visits

  • Conduct site assessments and evaluations to review existing lighting conditions, troubleshoot issues, and gather data for retrofit or renovation projects.

Budget Management

  • Prepare project cost estimates and lighting budgets.
  • Monitor expenses to ensure projects remain within approved budgets.

Project Management

  • Manage lighting projects from concept through completion.
  • Coordinate with contractors, electricians, architects, and other stakeholders to ensure timely and accurate installation.

Quality Control

  • Perform inspections to verify lighting systems are installed according to specifications and function as intended.

Commissioning

  • Oversee the commissioning process to ensure lighting controls and systems operate efficiently and in accordance with design requirements.

Documentation

  • Maintain accurate project documentation, including drawings, specifications, change orders, and as-built records.

Client Communication

  • Provide regular updates to clients, address concerns, and ensure satisfaction with lighting solutions.

Technology Integration

  • Evaluate and implement smart lighting systems, automation technologies, and advanced controls to improve user experience and maximize energy savings.

Qualifications

Education

  • Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering, Architectural Engineering, Lighting Design, or a related field.
  • Lighting design certifications such as Lighting Certified (LC) are preferred.

Experience

  • Proven experience in lighting design and engineering, preferably within a consulting, engineering, or architectural environment.
  • Experience with lighting design software such as AGi32, DIALux, or similar tools is preferred.

Technical Knowledge

  • Strong knowledge of lighting principles, photometry, lighting controls, fixtures, and related technologies.
  • Understanding of lighting system design, implementation, and maintenance.

Codes and Standards

  • Familiarity with industry standards and regulations, including:
    • ASHRAE
    • IESNA
    • Energy codes
    • Electrical and safety standards

Software Proficiency

  • Proficiency in:
    • AutoCAD
    • AGi32
    • DIALux
    • Microsoft Office Suite
    • Other relevant lighting and design software
