Job Description:
The Scientific Laboratory Manager serves as a centralized scientific and operational resource for Department of Medicine (DOM) Research Hub faculty, providing expert guidance on laboratory setup, compliance, operations, equipment, and continuous process improvement. This position supports the full lifecycle of faculty laboratory spaces-from onboarding and activation through transitions, closeouts, and ongoing consultative support-while ensuring alignment with University of Florida policies, regulatory requirements, and best practices in scientific laboratory management.
This role works collaboratively with Research Hub leadership, research faculty, and campus partners (e.g., IACUC, Environmental Health & Safety) to support streamlined and compliant laboratory operations.
Essential Functions:
Research Faculty Laboratory Onboarding
• Serve as the primary scientific advisor and point of contact for incoming Research Hub faculty on laboratory onboarding and setup.
• Provide advanced support for guidance, revision, and submission of UF Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) protocols for incoming research faculty.
• Coordinate with incoming research faculty and the DOM Assets and Space team to manage logistics related to receipt, installation, and setup of laboratory equipment and supplies.
• Liaise with Research Hub Leadership and the DOM Assets and Space team to advise incoming faculty on availability of department equipment, core facilities, and to answer questions regarding lab equipment and supplies procurement.
• Support new faculty coordination with UF Environmental Health & Safety (EH&S) to ensure new labs are aware of and comply with the required steps to ensure safety, regulatory, and operational requirements.
Research Faculty Recruitment Support
• Provide cost estimations for research laboratory startup packages and advise on availability of existing core resources or departmental/divisional shared equipment for research faculty recruitment candidates.
Research Faculty Laboratory Closeouts & Moves
• Coordinate with outgoing Research Hub faculty to facilitate laboratory moves or closeouts.
• Ensure completion of all required laboratory closeout procedures, including EH&S compliance, equipment disposition, and required documentation.
Documentation and Process Improvement
• Develop, maintain, and disseminate standard operating procedures (SOPs), guidance documents, and reference materials related to:
o Faculty laboratory onboarding and offboarding processes, including lab moves.
o Laboratory procurement and equipment acquisition
o Laboratory supplies, equipment, and services cost estimates
• Design and implement a Research Hub Scientific Laboratory Management ticketing system to track and manage faculty requests for consultative support.
Scientific Laboratory Management Consultation
• Provide ongoing consultative support to Research Hub faculty related to laboratory operations and estimation of specific laboratory operating budgets for grant applications.
• Coordinate with research faculty for IACUC & Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC) approval processes.
Ad Hoc Assignments
• Perform additional responsibilities as assigned by the Research Hub Director and Research Administrator to support evolving research and operational needs.
Expected Salary:
$75,000 - $95,000 annually
