Job description

General Position Summary & Responsibilities:
The Commercial Manager in Training (CMIT) reports to a Commercial Leader, which may vary depending on line of business and/or territory. This developmental role is designed to build the knowledge, judgment, and field capability required to succeed in Radius Recycling's organization within the metals recycling industry. Through structured training, field exposure, and cross-functional learning, the CMIT develops an understanding of ferrous and nonferrous scrap procurement, commodity grading, pricing strategy, margin management, logistics, supplier development, and operational execution. This role is intended to create a strong pipeline of future commercial talent by preparing the incumbent for broader account responsibility and commercial leadership opportunities based on performance, readiness, and business need.
The CMIT will learn how to generate and grow purchases of scrap metals within an assigned geographic area and support the commercial team in managing a book of business. This includes visiting current and prospective suppliers such as scrap dealers, demolition contractors, industrial manufacturers, auto recyclers, and other scrap-generating businesses. The CMIT will develop the ability to identify new supply sources, build productive business relationships, and support commercial growth initiatives that align with company goals while gaining hands-on exposure to the commercial, operational, and market dynamics that drive performance across the operating platform.
The role provides structured development in commercial negotiations, commodity market awareness, logistics coordination, cost-to-serve considerations, inventory management, and supplier relationship management. The CMIT learns how commercial decisions affect safety, service, throughput, quality, working capital, and profitability, while progressing toward readiness to manage accounts and support commercial growth objectives independently.
This position offers competitive pay along with a variety of benefits including medical, dental and vision plans for both you and your dependents; 401k with company match, Flexible Time Off, and paid holidays.
Salary Range: $72,500 - $87,500 annually
What Success Looks Like:
Builds working knowledge of scrap grades, pricing drivers, and supplier economics; develops effective supplier and internal partnerships; demonstrates sound judgment in field and commercial settings; balances service, safety, and margin considerations; and progresses toward readiness to manage accounts and support commercial growth objectives with increasing independence.
Essential Functions:
Environmental Health & Safety (H&S)
  • Strictly adheres to all Radius Recycling health, safety, environmental, and operational standards.
  • Wears required personal protective equipment and follows all yard, plant, and customer-site safety requirements.
  • Helps maintain a safe environment for employees, customers, contractors, and visitors.
  • Immediately reports safety concerns, environmental issues, incidents, near misses, and policy violations in accordance with company expectations.

Commercial Training & Business Development
  • Learns Radius Recycling's commercial strategy, supplier segmentation approach, and purchasing models across ferrous and nonferrous commodities.
  • Trains on development and management of a book of business, including prospecting, supplier retention, account planning, and follow-through.
  • Supports the commercial team in identifying, pursuing, and developing new sources of recyclable materials.
  • Participates in supplier visits, ride-alongs, account reviews, bid opportunities, and relationship-building activities.
  • Learns how to assess supplier needs, service requirements, material flow, quality expectations, and competitive market conditions.
  • Develops negotiation skills related to pricing, freight, deductions, downgrades, claims, and other commercial terms.

Commodity Knowledge & Pricing
  • Builds working knowledge of ferrous and nonferrous grades, inspection standards, contamination risks, and material quality considerations.
  • Learns how commodity value is influenced by market conditions, specifications, recovery yields, processing costs, freight, and downstream demand.
  • Trains on pricing tools, commercial reports, and market intelligence used to support purchasing and sales decisions.
  • Develops the ability to discuss market trends, competitive dynamics, and pricing rationale in a professional and commercially sound manner.
  • Learns how to evaluate margin impact by considering purchase price, transportation, processing, recovery, inventory, and shipment economics.

Operations & Cross-Functional Partnership
  • Gains exposure to yard, shredding, inspection, receiving, grading, logistics, and shipment processes to understand the full metals recycling value chain.
  • Works cross-functionally with operations and support teams to align commercial commitments with site capabilities, safety requirements, and service expectations.
  • Learns scrap acceptance standards, material flow considerations, inventory management expectations, and operational constraints that affect profitability.
  • Supports communication between commercial and operations teams regarding supplier service issues, quality concerns, shipment timing, and special handling needs.
  • Develops understanding of internal controls, documentation requirements, and compliance processes that support commercial transactions.

Reporting, Systems & Analysis
  • Learns to use company systems, commercial tools, spreadsheets, and reporting resources to track suppliers, pricing, shipments, margin, and account activity.
  • Assists with preparation and review of reports related to volume, purchasing activity, pricing, market trends, and supplier performance.
  • Develops the ability to analyze data, identify trends, and escalate issues or opportunities to commercial leadership.
  • Maintains accurate records, call notes, follow-up actions, and account documentation.

Special Projects
  • Performs special projects and other duties as needed or assigned.
  • Participates in developmental assignments intended to expand commercial, operational, and leadership capability.

Internal Control Responsibilities:
Supports the Company's internal control process by understanding, communicating, and complying with established controls, policies, and procedures. Helps identify opportunities to improve processes and elevates concerns related to operations, compliance, ethics, or policy violations through appropriate channels.

Must be able to work safely in an active industrial environment while wearing required personal protective equipment. Reasonable accommodation may be made to enable qualified individuals to perform the essential functions.
Qualifications:

Preferred Qualifications:
