What are some common challenges faced by manager fiber optics engineers when overseeing large-scale network deployments?

Manager Fiber Optics Engineers often encounter challenges related to coordinating multidisciplinary teams, ensuring project timelines are met, and maintaining high quality and safety standards during large-scale network deployments. Managing supply chain issues, adapting to unexpected site conditions, and balancing multiple stakeholder expectations are also typical hurdles. Proactive communication, strong project management skills, and a thorough understanding of fiber optic technology are essential for overcoming these challenges and delivering successful projects.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a manager fiber optics engineer?

To thrive as a Manager Fiber Optics Engineer, you need expertise in fiber optic technologies, network design, and project management, usually backed by an engineering degree and relevant experience. Familiarity with optical testing equipment, network management software, and industry certifications like FOA CFOT or Cisco certifications is highly beneficial. Strong leadership, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication skills are essential for managing teams and collaborating across departments. These competencies ensure efficient project delivery, high network reliability, and successful team coordination in a rapidly evolving technical field.

What does a manager fiber optics engineer do?

A Manager Fiber Optics Engineer oversees the design, installation, maintenance, and optimization of fiber optic networks. They manage a team of engineers and technicians, ensuring that projects are completed on time, within budget, and according to technical standards. Their responsibilities also include troubleshooting network issues, coordinating with other departments, and staying updated on emerging fiber optic technologies to enhance network performance.

What is the difference between Manager Fiber Optics Engineer vs Fiber Optics Technician?

AspectManager Fiber Optics EngineerFiber Optics Technician
CredentialsBachelor's degree in engineering or related field, certifications like FOA Certified Fiber Optic Technician (CFOT) often preferredHigh school diploma or equivalent, certifications like CFOT
Work EnvironmentDesign, oversee installation projects, coordinate teams, and ensure quality standardsInstall, test, and maintain fiber optic cables and systems on-site
Industry UsageUsed in telecommunications, data centers, and network infrastructure companiesPrimarily in fieldwork for installation and maintenance in similar industries

The Manager Fiber Optics Engineer focuses on project management, design, and team coordination, requiring higher-level technical knowledge and leadership skills. In contrast, the Fiber Optics Technician handles hands-on installation and maintenance tasks. Both roles are essential in fiber optic network deployment but differ significantly in responsibilities and required qualifications.

Job description

PsiQuantum's mission is to build the first useful quantum computers-machines capable of delivering the breakthroughs the field has long promised. Since our founding in 2016, our singular focus has been to build and deploy million-qubit, fault-tolerant quantum systems.
Quantum computers harness the laws of quantum mechanics to solve problems that even the most advanced supercomputers or AI systems will never reach. Their impact will span energy, pharmaceuticals, finance, agriculture, transportation, materials, and other foundational industries.
Our architecture and approach is based on silicon photonics. By leveraging the advanced semiconductor manufacturing industry-including partners like GlobalFoundries-we use the same high-volume processes that already produce billions of chips for telecom and consumer electronics. Photonics offers natural advantages for scale: photons don't feel heat, are immune to electromagnetic interference, and integrate with existing cryogenic cooling and standard fiber-optic infrastructure.
In 2024, PsiQuantum announced government-funded projects to support the build-out of our first utility-scale quantum computers in Brisbane, Australia, and Chicago, Illinois. These initiatives reflect a growing recognition that quantum computing will be strategically and economically defining-and that now is the time to scale.
PsiQuantum also develops the algorithms and software needed to make these systems commercially valuable. Our application, software, and industry teams work directly with leading Fortune 500 companies-including Lockheed Martin, Mercedes-Benz, Boehringer Ingelheim, and Mitsubishi Chemical-to prepare quantum solutions for real-world impact.
Quantum computing is not an extension of classical computing. It represents a fundamental shift-and a path to mastering challenges that cannot be solved any other way. The potential is enormous, and we have a clear path to make it real.
Come join us.
Job Summary:
The Senior Optical Fiber Design Engineer reports into the System Design organization. This role supports the Optical Distribution Network (ODN) design and integration for current and future systems. This includes the design, development, integration and validation of the fiber network and hardware to support the complex fiber network needed in our quantum systems.
Responsibilities:
  • Support end-to-end system fiber link architecture connecting subsystems, PICs and control systems.
  • Create detailed fiber designs for complex optical distribution networks. This includes routing, splice plans, and overall optical I/O.
  • Contribute to link budgets and calculations to meet System Architecture requirements for worldline loss.
  • Define guidelines for fiber routing, splicing, connectorization, cleanliness, and handling to meet quantum performance thresholds.
  • Work with vendors and evaluate advanced fiber optic components, and qualify such components for use in quantum computing applications.
  • Some Python scripting, calling Controls SW APIs / drivers to control lab equipment and proprietary systems.
  • Clear communication and cross functional collaboration.
