Position Highlights
The Gutierrez Laboratory in the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology invites applications for a full-time, temporary Research Professional I.
In this role, the Research Professional will be responsible for conducting research activities that support the overall mission of the Gutierrez Laboratory, including working with beneficial bacterial isolates from flies. They will also assist with other duties essential to the smooth operation of the laboratory, including ordering supplies, training new personnel in basic bench techniques, and administering laboratory safety programs.
This is an Extended Temporary Employment (ETE) position expected to last 6 months, with the possibility of extension up to one year.

Duties & Responsibilities
Conducting scientific research, including:
  • Maintaining bacterial glycerol stocks and managing common bacterial supplies (e.g., bacterial media, glycerol stocks, etc.).
  • Working independently on defined experiments, primarily in microbiology and molecular biology and reporting findings to the PI.
  • Demonstrating a general understanding of the research lab's mission.
  • Effectively prioritizing workload.
  • Managing multiple priorities to meet defined deadlines.
  • Assisting the PI with laboratory manuscripts, specifically contributing to the methods, results, and figure generation sections for experiments directly performed.

Overseeing lab operations, including:
  • Participating in lab meetings and other scientific seminars or meetings.
  • Placing orders for materials and supplies.
  • Collaborating with the EEB business office to ensure laboratory expenses are appropriately charged to sponsored accounts and monitoring expenditure levels to remain within awarded budgets.
  • Monitoring laboratory inventory and maintaining adequate common supplies.
  • Keeping the laboratory organized and maintaining all protocols in shared Google Documents.
  • Serving as a knowledge resource and providing training on laboratory procedures.
  • Managing and preparing the laboratory for annual biosafety inspections and other regulatory review processes.
  • Administering lab safety programs, training and monitoring lab members to ensure compliance with all applicable regulations, establishing environmental health and safety standards and policies, and overseeing documentation of safety-related standard operating procedures (SOPs).
  • Responding to calls from lab members outside of routine work hours regarding lab-related questions or emergencies.
  • Addressing equipment malfunctions outside of standard work hours, which may occasionally require reporting to the lab in person.

  • Demonstrated strong, positive interpersonal skills.

Physical and Environmental Abilities:
  • Ability to lift/move up to 25 lbs.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent advanced learning attained through experience required.
  • Experiencein microbiology, molecular biology techniques (bacterial DNA extraction and PCR), and bacterialgenome sequencing (HiFiPacBio, Illumina, Nanopore).

Preferred Qualifications
  • Master's degree or higher in a related field.
  • One or more years of relevant work experience.
