Senior Director, Enterprise Risk Management

As a senior leader in Enterprise Risk Management (ERM), you will join a critical second-line-of-defense function responsible for defining the bank’s risk management architecture. This role is at the heart of our Risk Management Framework, positioned to take a critical role as we modernize our processes to be more nimble and effective while maintaining a robust risk posture.

We are seeking a strategic, forward-leaning Senior Director to spearhead our Risk Appetite, Board Reporting, and Effective Challenge programs. You will lead the charge crafting impactful and insightful enterprise-wide risk reporting to our Senior Management and Board of Directors, You will be a critical leader in the transformation in our Risk Appetite and Effective Challenge programs, with a focus on real time, intelligent solutions. This is a high-impact leadership position where you will regularly analyze complex topics and engage with senior executives across the lines of defense.

Responsibilities
  • Deliver high-impact reporting to Senior Management and the Board of Directors, providing a comprehensive and strategic view of the enterprise risk profile.
  • Design and operationalize a next-generation Risk Appetite program that leverages intelligent risk insights and real-time data aggregation, taking into account our diverse financial services company.
  • Lead cross-functional efforts to enhance Effective Challenge discipline across the second line of defense, ensuring rigorous oversight and impactful risk management.
  • Partner with technology and data teams to implement an enterprise system of record for key risk metrics, enabling predictive analytics, and automation.
  • Lead and develop a team of 8-12 risk professionals, organizing the team’s work to drive results, providing feedback and coaching to support professional development, and maintaining a strong pipeline of talented risk leaders.
Basic Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree or military experience
  • At least 10 years of experience in Risk Management, Project Management, or Process Management
  • At least 5 years of experience leading initiatives in a highly-regulated financial services environment
  • At least 5 years of experience influencing C-suite stakeholders and Board-level committees
  • At least 5 years of experience leading and developing teams
Preferred Qualifications
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills and ability to interact and influence at all levels in the organization, including with senior and C-level executives
  • Experience driving risk framework evolution through technology, AI, and automation.
  • Proven ability to simplify complex risk concepts into clear, actionable insights for diverse executive audiences.
  • Expertise in navigating and influencing across all three lines of defense.
  • Experience and ability to solve complex problems, supported by research, data analysis, and inputs from stakeholders.
  • Passionate about building a best-in-class risk strategy that balances innovation with rigor.

The minimum and maximum full-time annual salaries for this role are listed below, by location. Please note that this salary information is solely for candidates hired to perform work within one of these locations, and refers to the amount Capital One is willing to pay at the time of this posting. Salaries for part-time roles will be prorated based upon the agreed upon number of hours to be regularly worked.

Candidates hired to work in other locations will be subject to the pay range associated with that location, and the actual annualized salary amount offered to any candidate at the time of hire will be reflected solely in the candidate’s offer letter.

This role is also eligible to earn performance based incentive compensation, which may include cash bonus(es) and/or long term incentives (LTI). Incentives could be discretionary or non discretionary depending on the plan.
