Job description

The expected hiring range for this position is:

$23.39-$28.52.

Please note that the pay range information is a general guideline only. The pay offered to a selected candidate will be determined based on factors such the scope and responsibilities of the position, qualifications of the selected candidate, business considerations, internal equity, and external market pay for comparable jobs.

About the Role:

Under direct supervision, you will perform landscape maintenance activities with basic knowledge in the operation of equipment such as handheld power tools, mowers, tractors, snowplows, and heavy equipment.

What your day-to-day as a Groundskeeper at Fermilab will look like:

  • Performing landscape maintenance activities including mowing, trimming, pruning, plant care, pesticide application, fertilizing, and snow removal.

  • Completing routine landscaping repairs which may require hauling, spreading, and seeding of topsoil, and installation of erosion control materials.

  • While under the general supervision of the Groundskeeper Crew Chief, you will execute tree removal with the use of chain saws, chippers, and stump grinders.

  • Participation in prairie and woodland restoration activities including prescribed fire management, and the control of invasive plants using herbicides.

  • Assisting in maintenance of the underground storm water drainage systems, including cleaning, repairing, and replacing culverts, catch basins, and drainage tiles.

  • Performing heavy physical labor, including lifting up to 50 lbs.

  • Performing other duties as assigned by supervisor.

  • Abiding by and being responsible for performing all duties in accordance with all environmental, health and safety regulations and practices pertinent to this position.

Skills and Attributes for Success:

  • High School diploma and 1+ yrs. Experience.

  • Must possess a valid Illinois Department of Transportation Commercial Driver's License (class A or B).

Applicable Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:

  • Ability to operate equipment and job-related machinery.

  • Basic knowledge of hand-held power tool operation and maintenance.

  • Ability and willingness to obtain NWCG S130 & S190 basic wildfire training or equivalent (Fermi will pay for this)

  • Ability and willingness to obtain a pesticide operator's license (Fermi will pay for this)
