Description
Performs intermediate skilled trades work assisting with the inspection of construction, maintenance, and repair projects for infrastructure improvements, conducting surveys and analyzing data, preparing and maintain records, reports, and files, and related work as apparent or assigned. Work performed under the limited supervision of the City Engineer.
Essential Functions
  • Performs routine surveys, engineering or traffic engineering drafting; collaborates with other departments as needed.
  • Assists in the inspection of civil and traffic engineering projects to ensure conformity with plans and established standards for construction, maintenance, and repair operations.
  • Gathers, analyzes, and records survey and/or traffic data for civil and traffic engineering improvements utilizing survey, mechanical and computer devices and equipment ; prepares reports, charts, graphs, and plans for both civil and traffic engineering activities; assists in the planning, design and layout of proposed civil and traffic construction projects. Makes survey-data calculations.
  • Compiles data from construction inspections; prepares individual daily reports for documentation of the construction project; files paperwork with MDOT as necessary for completion of construction projects; completes contract documents.
  • Prepares, maintains, and files a variety of records, reports, and correspondence; enters a variety of data into computer; prepares work orders; prepares and submits TCO's for approval; prepares preliminary cost estimates of maintenance, repair, and construction projects.
  • Locates proper placement of new/removal of signs; handles requests for handicap sign installation.
  • Assists with the scheduling of contractors.
  • Utilizes various software programs such as AutoCAD, MERL, Field Manager, City Works and ArcMap to manage inventories, records, etc.

Minimum Qualifications
  • High school diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Recent experience preferred in semiprofessional civil/traffic engineering, surveying or related work.

Physical Requirements/Working Conditions
This work is sedentary and requires the occasional exertion of up to 10 pounds of force, frequent exertion of up to 25 pounds of force and occasional exertion of up to 50 pounds of force; work regularly requires sitting, bending, reaching, hand dexterity (grasping, holding, keyboarding, repetitive movements), reading, writing, eye-hand coordination, seeing (near and/or far, color, depth, field of vision), hearing, using the telephone, contact with government officials and the general public, working overtime, and working inside and alone. Work regularly requires exposure to outdoor weather conditions, frequently requires working near moving mechanical parts and occasionally requires wet, humid conditions (non-weather), exposure to fumes or airborne particles and exposure to extreme heat (non-weather); work is generally in a moderately noisy location (e.g. business office, light traffic).
