Job description

Job Requirements

We are hiring a Certified Sterile Processing Tech to join our team!

  • Full-Time Evenings; 3:00pm to 11:30pm

The Certified Sterile Processing Technicians are allied health professionals, who are an integral part of the Perioperative Department healthcare team who provide sterilized equipment for use during a surgical procedure. The Certified Sterile Processing Technician works under the supervision and delegatory authority of a Sterile Processing Department Manager, supervisor or designee, to facilitate high standards of decontamination, assembly, inspecting, wrapping and sterilization of surgical instrument for Surgical Services, 0B Services, and all other ancillary departments. Certified Sterile Processing Technicians load and unload cart washers and various sterilizers and put away sterile instruments and supplies. This includes working in conjunction with the OR staff to provide timely sterile products, trays and case carts where applicable. The Certified Sterile Processing Technician maintains consistency and continuous workflow between the OR and Sterile Processing while practicing above average customer service. The Sterile Processing Technician reports to the Manager of the Sterile Processing Department and RN Director of Surgical Services.

Minimum Requirements 

Education          

  • High School Graduate/GED
  • Graduate of an accredited CST Program

Experience         

  • New grad to experienced Certified Sterile Processing Technician

License/Registration/Certifications              

  • Certification, as a certified surgical technologist (CST), conferred by the National Board of Surgical technology and Surgery Assisting (NBSTSA)
  • Certification, as a certified Sterile Processing Department Technician (CSPDT), conferred by the Certification Board for Sterile Processing and Distribution (CBSPD)
  • Certification, as a Certified Registered Central Service Technician (CRCST), conferred by The International Association of Healthcare Central Service Materiel Management (IAHCSMM)

Preferred Experience     

  • One or more consecutive years of experience working as a Certified Sterile Processing Technician 

Preferred License/Registration/Certifications              

  • Active membership in a local or national chapter of The International Association of Healthcare Central Service Materiel Management (IAHCSMM) or
  • Active membership in a local or national chapter of the Association of Surgical Technologists (AST)

Core Job Responsibilities

  • Successfully completes hospital and unit-based orientation programs

  • Successfully completes annual hospital and unit-based required competencies and education

  • Able to establish priorities and prepare for emergency situations during scheduled work hours and scheduled on-call hours

  • Accepts constructive feedback to improve job performance and collaborates with Manager, CUE and/or Shift Supervisor to make necessary adjustments

  • Attends staff meetings to remain knowledgeable in department updates and practices

  • Collaborates with other members of the healthcare team to determine instrument priorities for case needs
  • Complies with established policies and procedures
  • Coordinates and develops staff, provides leadership by example on proper department procedures
  • Demonstrates knowledge of appropriate infection prevention strategies to prevent surgical site infections

  • Demonstrates knowledge of the procedure being performed and anticipates the needs of the surgical team

  • Effectively communicates, both written and verbal, with co-workers.

  • Ensures compliance with all clinical expectations regarding regulatory requirements such as: improved on time starts initiatives; and reduction in surgical site infections 

  • Ensures that all instrument sets are properly arranged and organized
  • Other duties may be assigned as necessary to facilitate the functions of the department and hospital.

  • Participates in continuing education and achieving/maintaining certification

  • Performs patient care according to guidelines provided thru the Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation (AAMI); the Associate of surgical Technologist (AST); and the Association of peri-Operative Nurses (AORN)

  • Demonstrates knowledge of standard and transmission-based precautions to reduce the risk of cross-contamination by using appropriate disinfectant according to pathogen present in the environment. 

  • Inspects, assembles, packages and sterilizes medical devices following manufacturer’s recommendations and established procedure.
  • Maintains inventory of supplies and equipment and fills surgical case cart requisitions using hospital computer system.
  • Operates cleaning and sterilization equipment in the department according to manufacturer’s recommendations and established procedure.
  • Provides clinical guidance to surgical technology students and ancillary staff

  • Recognizes the importance of hand hygiene and performs appropriate hand hygiene techniques
  • Recognizes the importance of Personal Protection Equipment (PPE) while in the decontamination area and appropriately dons and doffs PPE
  • Responsible for demonstrating competency for all new equipment and processes

  • Participates in the orientation of new Sterile Processing associates 

  • Retrieves used cast carts when needed from patient care areas and returns to SPD for appropriate processing

  • Serves on unit-based committees
  • Responsible and accountable for own professional growth and development thru local and national AST and/or I IAHCSMM chapter involvement
  • Responsible for decontamination and cleaning of surgical instruments and other medical equipment following established policy and procedure
