KEY FUNCTION

Provide support in the repair and maintenance of the Hospital's medical equipment inventory. Provide on-call technical support and service through end user education, incident investigation, incoming inspections, installations and evaluations and extend technical service to contracted regional clients.

REPORTING

Under the general direction of the Manager, Biomedical Engineering.

DUTIES:

  1. Ensure the safe maintenance and repair of medical equipment and systems.
  2. Test, calibrate, troubleshoot, repair and upgrade medical equipment and systems to ensure they are operating safely, effectively and efficiently (e.g. physiologic and vital signs monitoring equipment, defibrillators, IV pumps, physiotherapy equipment, patient warmers, blood and fluid warmers, bladder scanners, etc.).
  3. Carry out preventative maintenance routines, inspections and evaluations using a variety of test equipment and tools (e.g. safety analyzers, conductivity meters, multi-meters and defibrillator testers, etc.) to ensure medical equipment is in proper working order.
  4. Perform incoming inspection of new equipment (i.e. receiving, documenting, assembling, installing, conducting performance and safety testing); coordinate the connection of systems to hospital network, and other specific activities dictated by the equipment of system(s) for clinical use.
  5. Determine tools, instrumentation and spare parts requirements for equipment maintenance.
  6. Maintain work documentation and equipment inventory information.
  7. Determine and align improvement projects with HSN's Strategic Plan; monitor and adjust to achieve goal outcomes.
  8. Participate in education and training specific to current, relevant federal and provincial health and safety legislation, standards and guidelines.
  9. Contribute to learner development by providing academic support, mentorship, preceptorship and supervision as required.
  10. Educate and promote health, safety and wellness in the work place.
  11. Represent the department or program on various committees and in meetings as required. 
  12. Perform other duties as required. 

QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION AND TRAINING: 

  1. Minimum of a three (3) year diploma in Electronics/Instrumentation Technology or in Biomedical Engineering Technology from an accredited college.
  2. Factory training in patient ventilators, anesthesia systems, and/or physiologic monitoring is preferred.
  3. Certification in good standing with Ontario Association of Certified Engineering Technicians and Technologists (OACETT) is preferred.
  4. Certified Biomedical Engineer Technologist in good standing with Canadian Medical and Biological Engineering Society (CMBES) is preferred.
  5. Ministry of Labour "Worker Health and Safety Awareness in 4 Steps" training certificate is required.

EXPERIENCE: 

  1. Minimum of two (2) years of practical and related experience working in a Biomedical Engineering department within a Health Care Environment.

KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES: 

  1. Demonstrated expertise in the technical aspects of end user education, incident investigation, incoming inspections, installations and evaluations.
  2. Current knowledge of Canadian Safety Association (CSA) and other related safety standards/ legislation as they apply to medical devices and systems.
  3. Demonstrated training, experience or utilization of quality improvement methodology for process improvement.
  4. Demonstrated ability to independently identify issues, plan improvements, measure success and continue improvement.
  5. Demonstrated excellent computer skills with proficiency in Microsoft Office software (e.g. Word, Excel, Power Point and Outlook) and patient information systems.
  6. Demonstrated superior interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal.
  7. Demonstrated effective time management and organizational skills with the ability to organize and prioritize as required.
  8. Demonstrated discretion and maturity when handling confidential information.
  9. Demonstrated commitment to the safety of co-workers and patients.
