Job Summary
Angelo State University invites applications for a Planetarium Director position in the Department of Physics and Geosciences beginning Spring or Fall 2027. The appointment will include a teaching load, with primary responsibility for teaching introductory astronomy and physics courses. The position will be longer than the typical 9-months to include summer planetarium duties.
Essential Duties
  1. Serve as director of the university planetarium
  2. Teach undergraduate astronomy and physics courses in traditional, online, and dual-credit formats
  3. Maintain effective teaching practices and contribute to the mission of the Department of Physics and Geosciences
  4. Advise and mentor students in academic and co-curricular activities
  5. Participate in departmental, college, and university service activities, including committee work and recruitment efforts
  6. Maintain effective teaching practices and contribute to the mission of the Department of Physics and Geosciences

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Knowledge of current instructional practices, learner-centered teaching methods, assessment strategies, and student engagement techniques.
  • Skill in utilizing new and novel instructional technology and alternative delivery methods
  • Skill in effective oral and written communication
  • Ability to engage the broader community in outreach that is STEM-related in general, and astronomy in particular
  • Ability to safely and effectively operate the planetarium projection system
  • Ability to work irregular schedules, including nights, weekends, and holidays
  • Ability to effectively manage budgets in order to maintain the planetarium, its projection system, and show offerings
  • Ability to effectively manage student workers
  • Ability to work collaboratively with faculty, staff, and students
  • Ability to contribute to program recruitment, student success initiatives, and departmental service activities

Minimum Qualifications
  • Master's degree in physics, astronomy, or a closely related field at the time of employment
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to teach undergraduate astronomy and physics courses in traditional, online, and dual-credit formats
  • Willingness to engage with the wider San Angelo community for STEM and astronomy outreach and informal education
  • Willingness to participate in departmental service activities and student recruitment efforts
